?Heart of gold:? Tributes pour in for Acadia University student who died in Mexico

WOLFVILLE -?The young woman who died during a trip to Cancun to celebrate her pending convocation is being remembered as a brilliant student, natural leader and dominant life force.

?She was brilliant, articulate, extremely charismatic and certainly someone that everyone admired and certainly looked up to,? said Matthew Rios, president of the Acadia University Students? Union.

Sydney Taylor, 21, died Tuesday after falling from a second-floor balcony at the Gran Caribe Real Resort and Spa.

Rios said Taylor was a fellow politics student, and always active in the department.

?She ? had some great ideas around environmental conservation, around feminism, she was always involved in different campaigns around campus,? he said, adding the sudden death has rattled the close-knit student body.

Taylor moved to Halifax from Atlanta, Georgia, with her family and attended Halifax Grammar School, graduating in 2009.

The owner of Stayner?s Wharf said Taylor made an immediate impression during the summer of 2011 when she worked as a hostess, and he was looking forward to her return later this month.

?She brought such a wonderful energy with her when she comes to work,? said Todd Abbass. ?She brightened everybody?s day and I was really looking forward to that.?

Taylor had emerged as a talented singer and guitar player since her first stint at Stayner?s, and Abbass said he?d been looking forward to seeing her perform.

?She?ll be greatly missed,? he said. ?I still have a hard time believing someone so young and so full of promise has left us.?
