The Virginia Gazette, Williamsburg Virginia > News > Preschool cuts ...

WILLIAMSBURG ? Preschool may lay down a sacrifice bunt for the rest of the school budget.?

Scaling back and retooling preschool would restore middle school sports while maintaining elementary class sizes and saving three jobs. Superintendent Steven Constantino will present his change-up Tuesday night.

Debate has raged lately whether preschool criteria have become too lax in a program that costs almost $4 million for 380 children. Preschool went unscathed in the first budget proposal, while more than 50 positions, middle school sports and $951,000 in base reductions were cut.

Those cuts comprised $4.2 million of a $7 million gap, so Constantino sought $2.9 million more from the city and county. That still stands.

He?s now found that health insurance won?t rise as much as once thought, saving $344,575. Preschool reductions bring the total savings to $641,000, enabling Constantino to shift those funds elsewhere.

Instead, preschool would undergo ?prioritization of students to be served.? It would also move preschool transportation to bus stops instead of door-to-door pickup.

Two preschool teachers, two preschool teacher assistants, a bus driver, and a bus aide are out, and the pre-school fuel budget is reduced.

The reductions help restore teacher-student ratios in the elementary schools. Three high school media assistant positions are also restored.

After the School Board discusses the changes Tuesday night, members will attend a joint meeting with City Council and the James City supervisors.?

Want to go? A public hearing on the proposed budget will start at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, in Building F at the James City County Govern?ment Complex. A work session will follow at 7 p.m. The annual joint meeting will run 8 a.m.-noon Wednesday, March 7, at the James City County Law Enforcement Center off Opportunity Way
