(AP) ? A single bell tolled Thursday at the Connecticut funeral of a 6-year-old girl killed by a gunman at her elementary school, while a cardinal in New York compared a slain teacher to Jesus for giving up her life to protect others.

In Newtown, the site of the shooting rampage, grim-faced mourners hurried through the packed parking lot of St. Rose of Lima Church to attend the funeral Mass for 6-year-old Catherine Hubbard.

Catherine's family said in her obituary that she would be remembered for her passion for animals and her constant smile.

Catherine was among the 20 students and six teachers killed when Adam Lanza, armed with a military-style assault rifle, broke into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown on Dec. 14 and opened fire. Lanza killed his mother at her home before the attack and committed suicide at the school as police closed in.

Funerals were also scheduled in Connecticut on Thursday for 7-year-old Grace McDonnell and 6-year-olds Benjamin Andrew Wheeler, Jesse Lewis and Allison Wyatt, and a memorial was held for teacher Lauren Gabrielle Rousseau.

In New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan told mourners at the funeral of 52-year-old Anne Marie Murphy that the teacher "brought together a community, a nation, a world, now awed by her own life and death."

Murphy's father, Hugh McGowan, said authorities told him that she died trying to protect her young pupils. Her body was found covering a group of children's bodies as if to shield them, McGowan said.

Dolan underscored her sacrifice.

"Like Jesus, Annie laid down her life for her friends," Dolan said. "Like Jesus, Annie's life and death brings light, truth, goodness and love to a world often shrouded in darkness, evil, selfishness and death."

About 15 people arrived at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Katonah, N.Y., in a yellow school bus with "Newtown" written on its side. The church quickly filled and about 100 mourners waited outside.

Janelle Wingert, of Wyoming, said in an email interview that she met Murphy when they were involved in the same faith-based community service activities in the Newtown area. She said Murphy asked her after 9/11 what she would do if someone attacked a school where she was working.

"She was serious and so intense in the question," Wingert said in a Facebook post. "She died doing exactly what she said she would do ? put herself between the gunman and her little ones, who she saw as the most precious of all in God's heart."

Trinity Episcopal church on Newtown's Main Street was filled to capacity for the funeral of Benjamin Wheeler, and scores of mourners who couldn't get in milled about outside. The service for a child described as a lighthouse buff, budding musician and Beatles fan included a rendition of "Here Comes The Sun" and the hymn "Amazing Grace."

Benjamin's five uncles acted as pallbearers. About two dozen Boy Scout leaders lined the front pathway to the church in honor of the former Cub Scout.

In downtown Danbury, mourners filed into the ornate white-pillared First Congregational Church for a memorial service for teacher Lauren Rousseau. The congregation in the packed church sang "Morning Has Broken" and "Let There Be Peace On Earth."

Friends wept on the altar as they remembered the spirited, hardworking, sunny-natured young woman who loved children and animals, especially cats, and who had always wanted to be a teacher. They spoke of how the 30-year-old brightened their lives with her silliness and gave them all nicknames.

A U.S. Justice Department official told The Associated Press that Attorney General Eric Holder would travel to Newtown on Thursday to meet with first responders and law enforcement officials. The trip comes after Holder met with Vice President Joe Biden, who is tasked with leading an administration-wide effort to create new proposals for reducing gun violence.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the trip hadn't been publicly announced.

In addition to the services, the families of 6-year-old Olivia Rose Engel, behavioral therapist Rachel Marie D'Avino and school psychologist Mary Sherlach have calling hours Thursday.

At least nine funerals and wakes were held Wednesday, and more are set for Friday and Saturday.

The Real Estalker: Connie Stevens Has Real Estate Problems: Part II

Earlier today Your Mama prattled aimlessly on about the compound-like Holmby Hills estate of actress/singer/skin care entrepreneur Connie Stevens that popped up on the open market last week to much fanfare, hoo-ha and ballyhoo with an almost eighteen million dollar asking price.

As was noted and partially parsed in late November by the National Enquirer, Miz Stevens has long maintained a rather prodigious portfolio of properties for both personal use and investment purposes on the east and the west coasts of the U.S., in between and south of the border.

In September 1988, according to transaction history on the archived Redfin listing, Miz Stevens paid $485,000 for a 3,085 square foot house on just over half an acre in the upper Coldwater Canyon area of the of Beverly Hills Post Office area, aka BHPO.* Miz Stevens listed the two stucture mini-compound in July 2012 with a $1,499,000. Just over three weeks later the price tag dropped dramatically and decisively to $899,000 and just about a month after that, in late September, the listing status was changed to "Pending," an indication a sale is imminent.

At least one property record data base we consulted shows at least two Notices of Default were recorded on the property, one in 2010 and the other in 2011. It appears, however, that Miz Stevens was able to stave off a lender seizure and auction of the walled, gated and?let's just be frank for a second?ass ugly fixer upper.

She may have averted foreclosure in the BHPO but Miz Stevens wasn't so lucky with a her 100 (or so) acre ranch in the Indian Springs enclave near Jackson Hole, WY that she reportedly picked up in 1993 for close to $10 million. She eventually custom built a large log cabin style mansion that, alas, was sold at auction in 2011 after she was unable?or unwilling?to maintain the hefty mortgage payments on the approximately $2.8 million in loans secured against the property.

The year before that, in March 2010, Miz Steven sold a quaint but frumpily "refreshed" 1925 bungalow (above) in Pasadena (CA) for $560,000. It appears, less expenses, she doubled her money on this one since several online resources indicate she bought the five bedroom and two bathroom house (with guest house) in early 1993 for $280,000. The next month, June 2010, Miz Stevens dumped a dowdily decorated 2,479 square foot condo on the 54th floor of the full service Millenium Tower building on the Upper West Side of Manhattan (above) for a decidedly un-dowdy seven million bucks. Drab as the ho-hum day-core looks in listing photos the three bedroom and 3.5 bathroom apartment?on the same floor as the top floor of Howard Stern's multi-unit duplex aerie?does have three spine tingling exposures with lordly views over Central Park to the east and the Hudson River to the west. A few months later Miz Stevens officially further lightened her real estate load when she offloaded a clearly renovated and nicely maintained two bedroom and three bathroom board and batten contemporary tucked into the tail end of a hook-shaped cul-de-sac in the Beverly Glen area of Beverly Hills Post Office (above). Property records and online listings show Miz Stevens paid $1,470,000 for the property in November 2005, first listed it in April 2009 and finally sold it in September 2010 for $1,060,000, a stomach churning $400,000-plus loss not counting the considerable carrying costs, upkeep expenses and real estate fees. Although there was a bit of thwarted foreclosure activity on the property in early 2011, records show Miz Stevens also and still owns the 4,182 square foot house immediately next door. There is some evidence online that Miz Stevens unsuccessfully attempted to sell larger BHPO residence way back in 2006 with an asking price of $2,349,000.

A little more peeking and poking around in various property record databases reveals to Your Mama that Miz Stevens continues to possess a couple of condos within gated developments in hot as Hades Palm Desert (CA) in California's Coachella Valley: one with 3,562 square feet situation at the Indian Ridge Country Club and the another a more middle-brow situation with 1,421 square feet at the nearby Silver Sands Racquet Club.

Miz Stevens also still owns a 5,170 square foot prototypically suburban macmansion in Las Vegas (NV) on .46 acres just inside the guarded gates of the upscale Ten Oaks development, about seven miles due east of The Strip. A little digging turned up evidence of some foreclosure activity on this property, but that icky issue seems to have been resolved in September 2011.

Your Mama has no idea if she still owns it or not, but a 1993 article in the Los Angeles Times reported that Miz Stevens had then just recently completed a decorative do over of a five bedroom beachfront getaway in Puerta Vallarta. That's Mexico, hunnies.

By our count Miz Stevens owned as many as 10 residences at one time. No doubt some were leased out for income and others maintained for personal use but imagine the financial burden of half a dozen or more homes, some of them rather high maintenance. Not wonder the septuagenarian Tinseltown icon and (former) cosmetic queen is still hoofing it: Miz Stevens made her directorial debut this year with the also self conceived, co-wrote and produced feature film Saving Grace B. Jones.

Some of Miz Stevens previous Showbiz gigs and accomplishments include a multi-year run on Hawaiian Eye in the late '50s and early 60s, the starring role on the short lived sitcom Wendy and Me and numerous theater and nightclub appearances not to mention a headline act in Las Vegas. Those in Your Mama's?ahem?advanced generation may (or may not) best remember Miz Stevens for her frothy haired appearances on least eight episodes of The Love Boat and/or for her several spins through the even more campy Fantasy Island.

It wasn't Showbiz, however, that earned Miz Steven all her once quite substantial?at least one online resource unscientifically pegged it as high as $50 million?and apparently somewhat diminished fortune. That lump of dough came in the 1990s after she developed and successfully mass marketed the Forever Spring skin care line on the Home Shopping Network. After sales plummeted from a high of $30 million to a low of $6 million, the home shopping juggernaut dropped Forever Spring. Such is the unforgiving and capricious way of capitalism, right? Anyhoo, we're not sure where the hair and skin care products are currently retailed but the full line?which includes a variety of scented lotions, potions, cosmetics and candles, at least one snow globe and for the men, fragranced shaving cream?is still available online.

It may or may not come as a relief to some of the children that an unidentified "close friend" told the National Enquirer in late November that although Miz Stevens feels the financial squeeze like so many other people in this still sluggish economy she's "certainly not broke." Well! Ahem. Harrumph! we should hope not. It's one thing for a rich person to get caught in a temporary cash crunch. These things happen. But, children, there's just no financial excuse for someone who earns tens of millions of dollars in a lifetime and to not have the good damn sense to bury five or ten million in a coffee can in the backyard just in case the economy tanks and/or they get stupid and blow through the bulk of their fortune.

*Properties in the Beverly Hills Post Office area maintain coveted 90210 zip codes but the less coveted public services (sanitation, education, police and fire protection etc) of the City of Los Angeles.

Ex-Sacramento mayor's aide arrested for theft

-- A former aide to Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson was arrested Tuesday and charged with multiple felonies for allegedly misusing her city-issued credit card to pay for trips to Disneyland and thousands of dollars in personal expenses.

Lisa Serna-Mayorga was charged with misappropriating public funds, grand theft, forgery and two counts of making or drawing worthless checks. She has been released on $50,000 bail.

Sacramento County prosecutors say Serna-Mayorga charged more than $19,000 worth of personal expenses to the card from July 2009 to June 2012, including trips to Disneyland, restaurant outings and hotel stays in Bodega Bay and Monterey.

She allegedly wrote checks to cover some of the expenses following an investigation into misuse of city credit cards, but did not have funds to cover them and stopped the payments before they could be cashed.

"As I said when this issue came to light last summer, I am saddened by this news," Johnson said Tuesday in a prepared statement. "The City moved swiftly to investigate and also conducted an audit of credit card use citywide.

"As charges have been filed, it would be inappropriate for me or my office to comment on any of the details," Johnson continued. "As the judicial process takes its course, our thoughts are with her family."

Serna-Mayorga, the daughter of former mayor Joe Serna and sister of Sacramento County Supervisor Phil Serna, served as office manager for the mayor and the City Council from 2008 to 2012.

"I loved my sister before this incident, I love her now, and I will continue to do so as she deals with this," Phil Serna said in a statement late Tuesday.

Serna-Mayorga could face up to seven years in prison if found guilty on all of the charges, prosecutors said.

A call to Serna-Mayorga's home on Wednesday was not immediately returned.

Hatch seeks to re-invent the digital pet for the iPhone age

Digital pets are nothing new. Tamagotchi were a craze in the 2-bit, low-res days. Yet, back then, they were hindered by technology that was insufficient to fully realize the visions of their creators or the imagination of their users. Flash forward to 2012 and Impending, in collaboration with RealMac, aim to make the genre what it was always meant to be -- with Hatch.

If those names sound familiar, it's because they're the folks behind Clear, the delightfully simple, gesture-based task management app for the iPhone and Mac. Impending's Phill Ryu has long spoken about the potential for apps like this on modern platforms like iOS, and it's fantastic to see he's really going for it. With RealMac, and the talent of people like David Lanham from the Iconfactory behind him, it's got all the pieces in place to make just exactly what the tag line promises:

An app that loves you back.

Hatch won't ship until next year, but the video teaser above shows wonderful animation, engaging interactions (including tying into the built-in background music system), and a smart focus on building the app-to-user connection.

Digital devices have become emotional possessions. Pet apps have been tried before, and have worked before, but the connection has deepened with the capabilities of our devices. They know time, they know location, they know us.

It'll be interesting to see how much of that Hatch captures at launch, and how much of us the little creatures capture over time.

Head on over to the website below for an extra sneak-peak, and a way to started with the fun.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. Sulfur compounds in petroleum fuels have met their nano-structured match.

University of Illinois researchers developed mats of metal oxide nanofibers that scrub sulfur from petroleum-based fuels much more effectively than traditional materials. Such efficiency could lower costs and improve performance for fuel-based catalysis, advanced energy applications and toxic gas removal.

Co-led by Mark Shannon, a professor of mechanical science and engineering at the U. of I. until his death this fall, and chemistry professor Prashant Jain, the researchers demonstrated their material in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

Sulfur compounds in fuels cause problems on two fronts: They release toxic gases during combustion, and they damage metals and catalysts in engines and fuel cells. They usually are removed using a liquid treatment that adsorbs the sulfur from the fuel, but the process is cumbersome and requires that the fuel be cooled and reheated, making the fuel less energy efficient.

To solve these problems, researchers have turned to solid metal oxide adsorbents, but those have their own sets of challenges. While they work at high temperatures, eliminating the need to cool and re-heat the fuel, their performance is limited by stability issues. They lose their activity after only a few cycles of use.

Previous studies found that sulfur adsorption works best at the surface of solid metal oxides, so graduate student Mayank Behl, from Jain's group, and Junghoon Yeom, then a postdoctoral researcher in Shannon's group, set out to create a material with maximum surface area. The solution: tiny grains of zinc titanate spun into nanofibers, uniting high surface area, high reactivity and structural integrity in a high-performance sulfur adsorbent.

The nanofiber material is more reactive than the same material in bulk form, enabling complete sulfur removal with less material, allowing for a smaller reactor. The material stays stable and active after several cycles. Furthermore, the fibrous structure grants the material immunity from the problem of sintering, or clumping, that plagues other nano-structured catalysts.

"Our nanostructured fibers do not sinter," Jain said. "The fibrous structure accommodates any thermophysical changes without resulting in any degradation of the material. In fact, under operating conditions, nanobranches grow from the parent fibers, enhancing the surface area during operation."

Jain's group will continue to investigate the enhanced properties of nanofiber structures, hoping to gain an atomic-level understanding of what makes the material so effective.

"We are interested in finding out the atomic sites on the surface of the material where the hydrogen sulfide adsorbs," said Jain, who is also affiliated with the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the U. of I. "If we can know the identity of these sites, we could engineer an even more efficient adsorbent material. The atomic or nanoscale insight we gain from this material system could be useful to design other catalysts in renewable energy and toxic gas removal applications."

Bachelorette Wedding Special Recap ? Ashley Hebert & J.P. ...

Bachelorette Wedding Ashley JP

Ashley and J.P.?s wedding finally aired Dec. 16 on ABC, and ?Bachelorette? fans got to see all the details of their big day: the preparation, the dress, the vows ? and,of course, the tears!

Ashley Hebert and J.P. Rosenbaum are only one of a few?Bachelorette couples in history to have made it down the aisle, as they got married in a beautiful ceremony Dec. 1 at The Langham Hotel in Pasadena, Calif. And since their romance played out in front of the ABC cameras, it only seems fitting that they got also married in front of them! The Bachelor?s own?Chris Harrison hosted the wedding special, and it was so emotional!

A History Of Their Love:

J.P. admits it was ?love at first sight? when he and Ashley met on The Bachelorette. He competed for her heart on the show, and he proved to be a worthy winner in May 2011, when he proposed to Ashley.

She says, ?When we kissed, it was sparks? and that they have a ?fairy tale relationship.? So sweet! They are clearly made for each other.

Preparing For The Wedding:

J.P. and Ashley told their families together about their plans for their big day, and their reaction was adorable. It?s clear that both families really approve of their union.

?We love Ashley? said J.P.?s mom Ilene Rosenbaum, while J.P. thanked Ashley?s family. Even Ashley?s sister seemed so excited for their wedding, and she was famously?skeptical?of their love when Ashley appeared on The Bachelorette.

Ashley and J.P. met with famous wedding planner Mindy Weiss to discuss their big day, and they were so cute!

J.P. said, ?It?s our day, but it?s really her day, and I want her to get every thing she wants.??Ashley wanted simple, feminine, neutral details for the wedding, with ?just a little color.? They chose white and cream flowers for the wedding, and the funniest moment was when Ashley picks out a wedding outfit for her dog Boo!

Speaking of their upcoming union, J.P. said, ?I was never a huge believer of fate, but what are the odds that I meet the woman of my dreams the way I met her? There is not a day that goes by ? that I don?t think about how lucky I am.? Aww!

Ashley got emotional when planning the wedding, and it was clear how excited she was to marry J.P. It was also obvious how excited she was to pick the cake! Red velvet seemed to be the winner for their big day, but Ashley knew the most important part of the day was ?becoming man and wife.?

The Dress:

Ashley had the help of her mom, J.P.?s mom and her sister to watch her try on her dress. She wore a beautiful white dress designed by?Randi Rahm?that Ashley helped design.

?It?s beautiful? says Ashley?s mom, while Ilene added, ?J.P. will love it. ? J.P. will be so overcome.?

As for the tux? J.P. tried on several with this father and best friend Sean. He admitted, ?It?s the most fun I have had? when planning the wedding. And the rings??Neil Lane, the famous ring designer ? who was recently name-dropped on 90210?? helped the pair pick out their rings together.

?I don?t know how I got this lucky? said Ashley, while J.P. admitted, ?I may start crying.?

Bachelor and Bachelorette Party:

Ashley and J.P. both went to Scottsdale, Ariz., for their respective parties. Ashley and her girlfriends had a day of pampering and fun, and Ashley even got a manicure of J.P.?s face! And no bachelorette party would be complete without a spot of pole dancing ? which Ashley was surprisingly good at!

Meanwhile, J.P. and his boys went for a day of car racing and then out for drinks. And the couple broke all rules of bachelor/bachelorette parties when they met up for some romantic fun at the swimming pool. Ashley said that J.P. is the most ?amazing man? and that she cannot wait to marry him.

Celebrity Guests:

Molly and Jason Mesnick?were just a few of the Bachelor alumni who appeared at the wedding, and they admitted they are ?not founding out? about the sex of their baby, which is due next year.

Trista and Ryan Sutter wished Sean Lowe well on his upcoming season, and Chris wished them well on their nine-year anniversary.?Emily Maynard, Ali Fedotowsky and Roberto Martinez?were just some of the other guests who were invited the wedding.

Ali said, ?J.P. and Ashley look so in love,? while Emily got ?chills? watching the first dance.

Their Big Day:

Ashley had a girls? breakfast before the wedding began, while J.P. was given words of wisdom from his boys. While Ashley was getting her wedding hair and makeup done, J.P. sent her a bracelet ? and she could not keep back the tears!

The bridesmaids wore cream-colored, one-shouldered dresses, while Boo (the dog) looked super cute in his little outfit. Ashley and J.P. married outdoors, and Ashley walked down the aisle to ?I Can?t Help Falling In Love With You.? Both she and J.P. cried; it was so adorable!

Chris spoke beautiful words as he married the pair, noting ?opposites attract.? Their moms joined them on the altar to partake in a tradition that ?ties the knot,? as they read several beautiful passages. More tears all around!

The Vows:

Both the bride and groom welled up with tears during their vows, as J.P. said, ?I can?t picture my life without you. ? I love you so much. ? I want to spend the rest of my life with you.?

Ashley added that ?relationships are the most important things in life? and ?every day, we are together will be the greatest day of the life.?

Then Chris announced them as man and wife! There was not one dry eye in the crowd, as everyone cheered for the newlyweds.

Their Future Together:

What?s next for the newly weds? A honeymoon! As for kids, J.P. said, ?When we have kids, and they ask how did you and mommy meet, I?ll say take a seat.? (Presumably, he?ll show them episodes from? The Bachelorette, which may or may not be the best idea.)

Ashley only wants one kid, while J.P. wants two in ?a year and a half.? We can totally see that happening!

It was really was a beautiful wedding and we think Ashley and J.P. will be together for a long time! (Hopefully forever!)

What do YOU HollywoodLifers? Will J.P. and Ashley be together forever?
