Analysis: Canadian housing - bursting bubble or gentle landing?

TORONTO (Reuters) - It's looking like an unsettling spring in Canadian housing, a market that has proven far more even-keeled and less scary for investors in recent years than in the United States. In what is traditionally the best season of the year for real estate agents, Toronto agent Ecko Jay says the industry is seeing far fewer buyers, a result of tighter lending rules, high prices and fear of a bubble. In Toronto alone, sales dropped 40 percent in the first quarter from a year earlier, making homeowners and investors jumpy.

Ontario unveils budget, opposition support not clear

TORONTO (Reuters) - Ontario's minority Liberal government unveiled a budget on Thursday that projected a narrower-than-expected 2013-14 deficit and included measures aimed at securing opposition support and preventing an early election for Premier Kathleen Wynne. However, it was not clear whether the budget will receive enough support to keep the Liberals in power, as opposition New Democratic Party leader Andrea Horwath said she would consult with voters before deciding what to.

SNC eyes shedding assets, focus on Americas in new strategy

TORONTO (Reuters) - Scandal-mired SNC Lavalin Group Inc reported a disappointing profit on Thursday as it laid out a growth strategy that would see it liquidate some infrastructure investments and focus on the lower risk markets of North and South America. SNC, one of the world's largest construction and engineering companies, said under the new strategy the Montreal-based firm would leverage its expertise in resources, exit investments at maturity, potentially sell non-core assets and reduce its equity stakes in large investments in the medium term.

AIG beats estimates, property and casualty business shines

(Reuters) - American International Group Inc's property and casualty business booked its first underwriting profit in two and a half years during the first quarter, as the insurer wrote more premiums at higher prices and reported lower losses. The long-awaited turnaround in AIG's property and casualty business helped the company beat analysts' quarterly profit expectations on Thursday, sending its shares up 3 percent in after-hours trading.

Breitling Emergency II: A Satellite Distress Signal On Your Wrist

Breitling's original Emergency watch first launched back in 1995 and was able to broadcast a distress signal on the 121.5 MHz analog band allowing ships, planes, and other vehicles to track it. But if your approximate location wasn't already known, it made locating the signal a bit tricky. So Breitling is introducing an upgraded version of the watch?the Emergency II?that adds the ability to send a distress signal to satellites circling overhead, so no matter where on Earth you're lost, you can be found.

Self-improvement seminar once and for all leaders | Mike Horn Blog

What?re you? A chief or perhaps a fan?

We are able to all become leaders and also supporters. Both are very important but the leader sets the nice example for his/her fans. A good leader has a good follower.

Maybe you should have a self-improvement seminar, if you think you?re not a great head.

Self-improvement workshop for leaders is training them to be good to the fans.

There are a number of self-improvement course for you personally. But leadership training seminar is the better for you personally.

In order to be considered a good chief, one must possess different features which will attract readers. The following qualities are only of few of the many qualities that are crucial for successful leadership:

1. Charisma- charismatic leaders have the present to the touch people through their choice of words. Charismatic leaders are alluring, wonderful and could encourage followers to guide a grand vision or idea.

2. Positive Attitude ? A leader who has a positive attitude can influence his/her readers to transport that same attitude. A good example of a leader with a confident attitude might be a parent or teacher.

Parents, fathers, or elementary teachers look and are viewed as role models to the young kids they are patient and teaching.

These role models would be the first leaders they experience in life. Since they?re their vehicles to the outside world and provide assistance and much needed help young ones become very dependent of leaders.

In case a parent is nurturing and loving with their daughter or son, they will flourish under this encouragement.

They?ll succeed, if a positive learning experience is provided by a school teacher to the kid and that success will become contagious? In just about any circumstance, a leaders positive attitude could have greater effect and influence on the supporters.

3. Determination ? Within an running world, a stimulating leader is actually a coach, coach or even a fellow teammate. Their coach is also an important factor, whilst the skill of people is a great determinant of a winning team.

If a coach can?t produce a successful team, his work are at risk. A coachs inspiration requires infusing his people with high standards, and setting challenging but attainable goals because they perform well. Thus, his/her capability to inspire his people may enhance their activities.

Determination also correlates with having a confident attitude. Each time a coach features a positive attitude and supplies a positive atmosphere for his players, then a staff will most likely be determined to go in his/her path where ultimate success are available.

4. Assertiveness ? A leader gets the duty to steer the course of his or her company. Whenever a leader is assertive and firm in delegating tasks to his subordinates, a greater respect will be held by them to check out through on the projects.

An assertive head gets the capability to share administration without being too autocratic or threatening with their subordinates.

More over, an assertive leader should not make his subordinates feel like theyre in a hostile environment. As an alternative, an assertive leader must respect his people, and need proper obligation at the same time. A leaders assertiveness and confidence gets respect. With that value, people are a great deal more likely to follow, help, and imitate their leader to have success.

Self-improvement is important for leaders. Joining self-improvement seminars may be a good assist in being a good head. youtube view increaser chat

How 'traffic' in our cells works both for and against us

May 1, 2013 ? A mechanism that permits essential substances to enter our cells while at the same time removing from them harmful components also has a "down side." This negativeaspect prevents vital drugs, such as anti-cancer drugs, from achieving their designed functions, while also enabling bacterial cells to develop resistance to penetration of antibiotics.

A study aimed at a fuller understanding of how this selective mechanism works -- with a view towards better controlling it through new drug designs -- is the subject of an article by Hebrew University of Jerusalem and German researchers that. has been published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in the US (PNAS).

The trafficking of materials in and out of cells is controlled by a variety of proteins found in the membrane surrounding living cells, called "transporters." It is these transporters that fulfill the important function of allowing entrance of vital compounds on the one hand and disposal of toxic compounds on the other hand.

While providing an essential survival strategy for the organism, the transporters that remove toxic compounds from the cell have been associated with the ability of the bacterial cell to develop resistance to antibiotics. In mammalian cells, transporters are responsible for some types of resistance of cancer cells to antineoplastic drugs (drugs against abnormal/cancerous growths). Since this resistance poses serious problems in the treatment of cancers and infectious diseases, these proteins are an important target for drug design.

To progress in this pursuit, a more complete knowledge of the transporter mechanism is required, but despite many studies, this mechanism is not yet fully understood. It is, however, well established that an essential part of the mechanism stems from the ability of the transporter to change conformations. Thus, the binding site of a particular transporter is alternatively exposed either to the cell cytoplasm (interior) or to the outside environment, enabling the protein to bind its materials on one side of the cell and transport them to the other side.

The research conducted by the Hebrew University-German team focused at a model transporter expressed in the brain: VMAT (Vesicular MonoAmine Transporter). VMAT is known to transport a variety of neurotransmitters like adrenaline, dopamine and serotonin. In addition, it can also transport MPP, a neurotoxin involved in models of Parkinson's disease.

A functional and structural link between VMAT and bacterial transporters responsible for multidrug resistance may suggest a common origin for both types of proteins. A number of studies demonstrated the significance of VMAT as a target for drug therapy in a variety of pathologic states, such as high blood pressure, hyperkinetic movement disorders and Tourette syndrome.

The research was conducted by Shimon Schuldiner, the Mathilda Marks-Kennedy Professor of Biochemistry at the Hebrew University, and his research students Dana Yaffe and Yonatan Shuster, in cooperation with a group led by Dr Lucy Forrest at the Max Planck institute in Frankfurt, Germany, and her post-doctoral associate Sebastian Radestock.

A computational method was used, allowing the development of a novel model, simulating the protein's 3D structure. The model led to a series of biochemical experiments, which in turn provided a better understanding of the transporter's conformational changes. Specifically, the research identified interactions within the protein that mediate the conformational changes.

The researchers hope that this knowledge may, in the future, help in designing drugs for treating pathologies involving transporters similar to VMAT, including infectious and neurological diseases.

Nest thermostat gets summer-savvy tweaks in update

Summer is inbound, at least for those in the northern hemisphere, and with it comes big temperature swings, humidity, and other problems. The Nest smart thermostat ($249) is getting ready with a few new features that should keep your home cool and dry.

First, the Nest will now use its light sensor to detect when it is in direct sunlight and adjust its readings accordingly. Sun can throw off a thermostat's readings and cause the air conditioning to run amok, but the new Sunblock features should prevent that from happening.

Fan-lovers will be happy to hear that new advanced fan controls are coming as well: Turn on the fan just for a few minutes every hour to circulate the air, or have them run all night for a cool breeze.

In extremely humid areas vulnerable to mold, the Nest will now run the A/C to dry things up a little. Nobody likes coming home to a muggy house. The mobile app will also now let you know when you need to change a filter or if something isn't working correctly.

Lastly, the "Auto-Tune" feature was recently updated to make special summer allowances, avoiding running energy-intensive appliances during peak hours and so on.

No need to install anything ? if your Nest is connected to your Wi-Fi, it should update itself on its own. More details on the features and instructions on activating them are at the blog post announcing the update.

Tony Award nominations may have a British accent

NEW YORK (AP) ? Two stories born in Britain are vying for America's biggest theater prize.

"Kinky Boots" and "Matilda" are each a virtual lock to get a Tony Award nomination Tuesday for best musical and each show will be eager to capture as many nods as possible in the other 25 categories.

The nominations will be announced from The New York Public Library for Performing Arts in a televised event co-hosted by Tony winner Sutton Foster and "Modern Family" star Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

"Kinky Boots" is based on the 2005 British movie about a real-life shoe factory that struggles until it finds new life in fetish footwear. Songs by pop icon Cyndi Lauper and a story by Harvey Fierstein have made it a crowd-pleaser, albeit in open-minded New York. Touring potential is key for Tony voters.

"Matilda," the import from London, is a witty musical adaptation of the beloved novel by Roald Dahl and is true to his bleak vision of childhood as a savage battleground. It has proven it can find audiences on both sides of the Atlantic.

The other contenders for the best musical prize ? the biggest reward on Tony night? include the peppy "Bring It On: The Musical" the hit-stuffed "Motown: The Musical," the quick-to-close "Hands on a Hardbody" and the sweet "A Christmas Story, The Musical."

"Kinky Boots" and "Matilda" also have a good chance of nabbing nominations in the best musical actor category, with some interesting drag involved for both shows' leading men, who both wear skirts onstage. British actor Bertie Carvel plays a brutal headmistress in "Matilda" and Billy Porter plays a drag queen in "Kinky Boots."

Others who may get a nod include Rob McClure as the lead in "Chaplin," Matthew James Thomas in "Pippin," Brandon Victor Dixon in "Motown: The Musical" and Jim Norton in "The Mystery of Edwin Drood." Porter's co-star Stark Sands might also get a nomination.

The best play category is stuffed, but only four can make it. The leading lights include Richard Greenberg's "The Assembled Parties," Sharr White's "The Other Place" and Christopher Durang's "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike."

Others with a real possibility include Colm Toibin's "The Testament of Mary," Nora Ephron's "Lucky Guy," Douglas Carter Beane's "The Nance," Craig Wright's "Grace," Holland Taylor's "Ann" and John Logan's "I'll Eat You Last: A Chat With Sue Mengers."

Leading the best musical revival group is "Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella" and "Pippin." Others hoping to fill out the four slots will be a solid "Annie," the brash "Jekyll & Hyde" and the rollicking "The Mystery of Edwin Drood."

The best play revival is as competitive as the new play category, with Horton Foote's "The Trip to Bountiful," Clifford Odets' "Golden Boy," Edward Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" and a one-man "Macbeth" in hot contention. Others include David Mamet's "Glengarry Glen Ross" and William Inge's "Picnic."

Leading actress in a play nominees may likely include Bette Midler from "I'll Eat You Last," Jessica Hecht in "The Assembled Parties," Cicely Tyson in "The Trip to Bountiful," Kristine Nielsen from "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike," Laurie Metcalf in "The Other Place" and Fiona Shaw from "The Testament of Mary." Other possibilities are Sigourney Weaver, Scarlett Johansson, Holland Taylor and Amy Morton.

On the male side, best actor in a play contenders include Nathan Lane for "The Nance," Tracy Letts of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" Tom Hanks in "Lucky Guy," Alan Cumming in "Macbeth" and David Hyde Pierce from "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike." Others with a shot include Douglas Hodge, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Shannon, and Alec Baldwin.

Top actresses in a musical likely will include Patina Miller from "Pippin," Laura Osnes of "Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella" and Valisia LeKae in "Motown: The Musical," Lilla Crawford from "Annie" and Stephanie J. Block of "The Mystery of Edwin Drood."

All four girls who rotate as the lead in "Matilda" ? Sophia Gennusa, Oona Laurence, Bailey Ryon and Milly Shapiro ? were deemed ineligible, although in London the four actresses there each took home the Oliver Award.

Some 870 Tony voters will decide the final awards after the nominees are revealed. The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, joint producers of the show, will host the glittery ceremony from Radio City Music Hall on June 9. It will be broadcast live by CBS. Only Broadway shows that opened since April 26, 2012, are eligible.
