10 Facts about Portable Electronics and Airplanes
Here?s what we do know, or at least here?s what makes sense and comes from reputable sources, including the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA):
1.??? Radio-frequency emissions from cell phones, laptops and other electronics can occur at the same frequencies used by aircraft communication, navigation and surveillance radio receivers. These emissions could cause fluctuations in navigation readouts, problems with other flight displays, and interference with air traffic communications.
2.??? It?s less risky to let passengers use portable electronics (with the exception of cell phones) at cruising altitudes above 3,000 meters* because the flight crew would have more time to diagnose and address any possible interference than they would during takeoff or landing.
3.??? Because passengers bring such a variety of portable electronics onboard in so many different states of function or disrepair, the FAA can?t assure that none of them will interfere with flight instrumentation. The agency thus tells carriers to prohibit their use completely during critical phases of flight.
4.??? The FAA has begun allowing flight crews to use tablet computers including iPads in the cockpit. But this is not as surprising as it might sound: Crews have actually been using portable computers called ?electronic flight bags? since the early 1990s to replace printed aircraft operating manuals, flight crew operating manuals and navigational charts.
5.??? Portable voice recorders, hearing aids, electric shavers and heart pacemakers do not need to be shut off at any time during a flight because their signals don?t interfere with aircraft systems.
6.??? For any gadget not specifically mentioned by FAA rules, an airline must demonstrate that this device doesn?t interfere with aircraft operation before it is allowed on board.
7.??? The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has banned the inflight use of 800 MHz cell phones since 1991 to keep cell networks from interfering with airplane instrumentation. (Before that cell phones were banned because they didn?t fit in the overhead luggage compartment or safely under a passenger?s seat.)
8.??? The FCC and FAA work in tandem to ban cell phones on airplanes. Even if a cell phone were to meet the FAA?s safety requirements, an airline would need an exemption from the FCC rule for that cell phone to be used inflight. Likewise, if the FCC rescinds its ban, the FAA would require an airline to show that the use of a specific model of phone won?t interfere with the navigation and communications systems of the specific type of aircraft on which it would be used.
9.??? RTCA, Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based federal advisory group, concluded that the FAA should keep its inflight restrictions in place after the group studied electromagnetic interference from cell phones and Wi-Fi transmitters in laptops from 2003 to 2006. At the same time, RTCA also published detailed processes that carriers and electronics makers can follow to certify such devices for inflight use if desired.
10.??? Airlines may offer inflight Wi-Fi between takeoff and landing. The FAA doesn?t restrict the use of Skype or other Internet calling software. (Airlines, however, have banned them for the sanity of their crew and passengers.)

HBT: Red Sox to name McClure pitching coach
As first reported by Jim Bowden of ESPN and Sirius XM Radio, the Red Sox are preparing to name Bob McClure as their next pitching coach.
McClure was a major league pitcher from 1975-1993, posting a 3.81 career ERA over 1158-plus innings. He joined the coaching ranks in 1999, first serving as a pitching instructor in the Rockies organization before moving on to the position of big league pitching coach in Kansas City. The Royals fired him in September of this year after six years on the job.
McClure will be?replacing Curt Young, who was let go by the Red Sox soon after the departure of manager Terry Francona. Boston posted a 4.20 team ERA in 2011, which ranked 22nd in the major leagues.

'Beyond Scared Straight': 17-Year Old Ashley Defiant At Every Turn (VIDEO)
Sometimes the kids involved in the Scared Straight programs learn something from it. Sometimes they gain some quick humility and perspective. And other times they have so much pride and defiance, that it just seems like nothing will get through to them. Ashley was one of those latter kids on "Beyond Scared Straight" (Thu., 10 p.m. EST on A&E).
She was arrogant and disrespectful to the end, proudly making every interaction between her and the officers at the jail a struggle. A thing as simple as mealtime she turned into an ordeal by refusing to clean her plate. When the officer threw the food on the floor and threatened to dump another tray on her if she didn't clean it up, Ashley responded, "You better dump it on me then."
Even after he tasked two other kids to clean up the mess because of her, she was still trying to goad him. It was as if she wanted him to lose control and hit her. While he was giving orders, she muttered, "Shut up, Piggy." It was just loud enough to be heard.
But while she was being defiant and arrogant in her tone and actions, her face and expressions told another story. It looked like she was acting more out of fear and discomfort than genuine cockiness. She was clearly uncomfortable, but that only made her more defiant. No showing weakness allowed.
The program appears to have had at least some impact on her, as she's given up smoking, drinking and selling drugs. But she still "reps her hood" and self-identifies as part of her gang.

GoHow Airport a decent free option for air travelers
If you're hopping on a plane today for the holidays, there's a new free travel app that's worth giving a look. GoHow Airport is a simple app that gives you information on a score of airports. You get an overview, list of shops, and info on food and drinks, services, parking and ground transportation. There's also a basic internal layout of the airport, and city weather info. The interesting thing here is that the airports themselves partner with Gohow to ensure the latest up-to-date information.
Also, GoHow Airport serves as a flight and trip itinerary manager. It's got listings for dozens and dozens of airports, and the flight listings are simple but work as advertised.
We're not going to call GoHow Airport our favorite travel app. But it's got a wealth of airport information that others don't. And, best of all, it's free. We've got screenshots and download links after the break.

Video: Lawyers mount surprise defense in treason case

>> reporter: it is the first public glimpse of private first class bradley manning in a year and a half. he's been locked away in military jails on charges in the wikileaks scandal. sitting quietly in the courtroom, manning appeared for today's hearing to determine if he should face court-martial. manning is charged with knowingly giving information to the enemy, by leaking hundreds of thousands of secret documents that were then published on the internet. but the prosecution claims that while in baghdad, as an intelligence analyst , manning stole the classified information from military computers. manning 's lawyers blame the leak on the military's own lax security and revealed that manning suffers from something called gender identity disorder , that he sometimes dressed as a woman, and at a facebook page under the name brianna. they sent manning to the sensitive intel job in iraq anyway. manning 's accused of leaking this classified video from an american helicopter gun ship over baghdad. killing suspected militants and two employees of reuters news service. he's also suspected of leaking secrets on american combat operations in iraq and thousands of embarrassing u.s. diplomatic cables with rude cracks about some of america's allies. almost all of it wound up on wikileaks , released publicly by its controversial founder julian assange.
