NBA veteran Jason Collins comes out as gay in Sports Illustrated article

Published: Monday, April 29, 2013 at 3:15 a.m.
Last Modified: Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at 12:34 a.m.

In a first-person article posted Monday on Sports Illustrated's website, Collins begins: ?I'm a 34-year-old NBA center. I'm black. And I'm gay.?

Collins has played for six teams in 12 seasons, most recently as a reserve with the Washington Wizards after a midseason trade from the Boston Celtics. He is now a free agent and wants to keep playing in the NBA.

?I didn't set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I'm happy to start the conversation. I wish I wasn't the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, ?I'm different,'? Collins writes. ?If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I'm raising my hand.?

Saying he had ?endured years of misery and gone to enormous lengths to live a lie,? Collins immediately drew support for his announcement from the White House ? President Barack Obama called him ? along with former President Bill Clinton, the NBA, current and former teammates, a sponsor, and athletes in other sports.

Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant tweeted that he was proud of Collins, writing: ?Don't suffocate who u r because of the ignorance of others,? followed by the words ?courage? and ?support.?

?We've got to get rid of the shame. That's the main thing. And Jason's going to help that. He's going to help give people courage to come out,? said Billie Jean King, a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame who confirmed she was gay after being outed in the early 1980s.

?I guarantee you he's going to feel much lighter, much freer. The truth does set you free, there's no question. It doesn't mean it's easy. But it sets you free,? King said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

The Wizards, whose season ended April 17, issued a statement from President Ernie Grunfeld: ?We are extremely proud of Jason and support his decision to live his life proudly and openly. He has been a leader on and off the court and an outstanding teammate throughout his NBA career. Those qualities will continue to serve him both as a player and as a positive role model for others of all sexual orientation.?

Collins' coach with the Celtics, Doc Rivers, drew a comparison between Monday's announcement and Jackie Robinson's role when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball.

?I am extremely happy and proud of Jason Collins. He's a pro's pro. He is the consummate professional and he is one of my favorite ?team' players I have ever coached,? Rivers said. ?If you have learned anything from Jackie Robinson, it is that teammates are always the first to accept. It will be society who has to learn tolerance.?

Collins says he quietly made a statement for gay rights even while keeping his sexual orientation a secret. He wore No. 98 with the Celtics and Wizards ? 1998 was year that Matthew Shepard, a gay college student in Wyoming, was killed, and the Trevor Project, a suicide prevention organization, was founded.

According to the General Social Survey, the public has grown increasingly accepting of gay relationships since the late 1980s. That survey found in 1987 that 76 percent of Americans thought sexual relations between adults of the same sex was morally wrong. That fell to 43 percent by 2012.

?I'm glad I'm coming out in 2013 rather than 2003. The climate has shifted; public opinion has shifted,? Collins writes. ?And yet we still have so much farther to go. Everyone is terrified of the unknown, but most of us don't want to return to a time when minorities were openly discriminated against.?

While some gay athletes have talked in the past about concerns that coming out would hurt their earning potential, 12-time Grand Slam singles champion King said she thinks Collins' openness could have the opposite effect.

?I have a feeling he's got a whole new career,? King said. ?I have a feeling he's going to make more in endorsements than he's ever made in his life.?

Sports equipment maker Nike released a statement Monday saying: ?We admire Jason's courage and are proud that he is a Nike athlete. Nike believes in a level playing field where an athlete's sexual orientation is not a consideration.?

On Monday evening, hours after his story appeared on the web, Collins wrote on Twitter: ?All the support I have received today is truly inspirational. I knew that I was choosing the road less traveled but I'm not walking it alone.?

Momentum has been building toward this sort of announcement from a pro athlete in a top league in the United States. NFL players Brendan Ayanbadejo and Chris Kluwe were outspoken in support of state gay-marriage amendments during last year's elections. Obama spoke about his support for gay marriage during his re-election campaign.

The topic made waves during Super Bowl week when one player, San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver, said he wouldn't welcome a gay member of his team. At the time, Ayanbadejo estimated that at least half of the NFL's players would agree with what Culliver said, at least privately.

Scott Fujita, who recently retired after an 11-year NFL career, said: ?I'm pleased to see such an overwhelmingly positive reaction to this news, because it just shows that we're becoming more accepting every day. But more than anything else, I'm happy for Jason. I'm not a gay, closeted athlete, so I can't pretend to know what that must have felt like for him. But I imagine this is freeing for him, and hopefully he's encouraged by the millions of people who are voicing their support. ... It's not a reaction to some rumor and it's not some unwanted outing. It's his message, and it was delivered under his control and on his terms.?

On Monday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell sent a memo to teams reiterating the league's anti-discrimination policy about sexuality. It includes a section on questions teams cannot ask prospective draft picks and free agents. After the NFL combine in February, three players said officials posed questions about sexual orientation.

Earlier this month, the NHL and its players' union partnered with an advocacy organization fighting homophobia in sports, and Commissioner Gary Bettman said the You Can Play Project underlines that ?the official policy of the NHL is one of inclusion on the ice, in our locker rooms and in the stands.?

?I would say the NHL has been a force to kind of obviously embrace and encourage. ... What (Collins) did, I think it's definitely (good) for basketball, and the same for hockey, too. It's going to be encouraging for more guys to step up and just be open about themselves,? Washington Capitals forward Joel Ward said.

Living in the nation's capital last month while the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments about same-sex marriage had an effect on Collins, who says ?the strain of hiding my sexuality became almost unbearable? at that time.

?Less than three miles from my apartment, nine jurists argued about my happiness and my future. Here was my chance to be heard, and I couldn't say a thing,? he writes. ?I didn't want to answer questions and draw attention to myself.?

After being a first-round draft pick in 2001, Collins has averaged 3.6 points and 3.8 rebounds for the New Jersey Nets, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Celtics and Wizards.

In his SI piece, he jokes self-effacingly about his journeyman career and a parlor game known as ?Three Degrees of Jason Collins.?

?If you're in the league, and I haven't been your teammate, I surely have been one of your teammates' teammates. Or one of your teammates' teammates' teammates,? he writes.

Never a star, he acknowledges, ?I take charges and I foul ? that's been my forte. ... I set picks with my 7-foot, 255-pound body to get guys like Jason Kidd, John Wall and Paul Pierce open. I sacrifice myself for other players.?

He continues: ?I go against the gay stereotype, which is why I think a lot of players will be shocked: That guy is gay? But I've always been an aggressive player, even in high school. Am I so physical to prove that being gay doesn't make you soft? Who knows? That's something for a psychologist to unravel.?

As for what response other NBA players will have to his revelation, Collins writes: ?The simple answer is, I have no idea.?

?Openness may not completely disarm prejudice, but it's a good place to start. It all comes down to education. I'll sit down with any player who's uneasy about my coming out,? he says in his account, adding: ?Still, if I'm up against an intolerant player, I'll set a pretty hard pick on him. And then move on.?

On Monday, there was an outpouring of positive sentiments.

In texts to the AP, Wizards guard Garrett Temple wrote, ?I was surprised. I didn't know and I was right next to him in the locker room. It definitely took a lot of courage for him to come out. He was a great teammate,? and rookie Bradley Beal said: ?I didn't know about it! I don't think anyone did! I am proud of his decision to come out and express the way he feels and I'm supportive of that!!?

Former teammate Jerry Stackhouse, now with the Brooklyn Nets, wrote in a text: ?I hope Jason is received well by our NBA family. Jason is a friend and a former teammate that I've enjoyed many laughs and conversations with and his sexual orientation won't change that with me. I've already reached out to him personally to show support and will encourage more guys to do the same.?

NBA Commissioner David Stern said in a statement: ?Jason has been a widely respected player and teammate throughout his career and we are proud he has assumed the leadership mantle on this very important issue.?

While Collins is the first male athlete in a major North American professional league to come out while intending to keep playing, several have previously spoken after they retired about being gay, including the NBA's John Amaechi, the NFL's Esera Tuaolo and Major League Baseball's Billy Bean.

?I think he is immensely brave. I think it's a shame in this day and age he has to be immensely brave, but he is,? Amaechi told the AP. ?He's going to be a remarkable and eloquent spokesperson for what it is to be a decent, authentic human being ? never mind just for gay people.?

Rick Welts, president and chief operating officer of the NBA's Golden State Warriors, is openly gay.

?He probably knows what he signed up for. There'll be a whole bunch more television reporters and cameras than he's probably had in the past. ... There had been a long of speculation about when, who, how. I think that speculation has been put to rest now,? Welts said, ?and we'll always remember that Jason Collins was the first man to do this.?

Collins says that if he remains in the NBA, he could face uncomfortable reactions from spectators.

?I don't mind if they heckle me. I've been booed before. There have been times when I've wanted to boo myself. But a lot of ill feelings can be cured by winning,? he writes.

He adds: ?I hope fans will respect me for raising my hand. And I hope teammates will remember that I've never been an in-your-face kind of guy. All you need to know is that I'm single. I see no need to delve into specifics.?

In February, former U.S. soccer national team player Robbie Rogers said he was gay ? and retired at the same time. Rogers is just 25, and others have urged him to resume his career.

?I feel a movement coming,? he tweeted after word of Collins' news broke.

Female athletes have found more acceptance in coming out; Brittney Griner, a two-time AP women's college basketball player of the year now headed to the WNBA, caused few ripples when she said this month she is a lesbian. Tennis great Martina Navratilova, who came out decades ago, tweeted Monday that Collins is ?a brave man.?

?1981 was the year for me ? 2013 is the year for you,? her post added.

Sports leagues in Britain and elsewhere in Europe have been trying to combat anti-gay bias. But the taboo remains particularly strong in soccer, where there are no openly gay players in Europe's top leagues. Homophobic chants are still heard at some games.

Soccer ?is not going to change,? said Amaechi, who is English and now lives in Manchester. ?If it wanted to change, it would change. It has the resources to do so. It doesn't want to change.?

Justin Fashanu is the only significant British soccer player to have come out publicly, doing so in 1990. The former Nottingham Forest and Norwich City striker was found hanged in a London garage in 1998 at age 37. According to an inquest, Fashanu left a note saying that, because he was gay, he feared he wouldn't get a fair trial in the United States on sexual assault charges. Maryland police were seeking him on charges that he sexually assaulted a 17-year-old boy.

Among other athletes outside the U.S. to come out was Gareth Thomas, a Welsh rugby star who attracted widespread media attention in 2009 when he announced he was gay. He continued playing until retirement in 2011.

Orlando Cruz of Puerto Rico came out in October as the first openly gay professional male boxer. Canadian swimmer Mark Tewksbury came out six years after winning a gold medal in the backstroke at the 1992 Barcelona Games. Four-time Olympic diving gold medalist Greg Louganis of the U.S. revealed he was gay in 1994, a year before announcing he was also HIV-positive. Former Olympic skiing gold medalist Anja Paerson of Sweden announced last year, after retiring, that she was in a long-term relationship with a woman.

In SI, Collins recounts that the first relative he came out to was his aunt, Teri Jackson, a San Francisco Superior Court Judge.

?I don't think Jason looked at his life as being a trailblazer,? Jackson said Monday.

?He has no regrets coming out,? she added. ?And he wants to play. And we'll see what happens next.?

White House spokesman Jay Carney called Collins' decision courageous and said the administration views it as another example of progress and evolution in the U.S. as Americans grow more accepting of gay rights and same-sex marriage.

Former President Clinton said: ?Jason's announcement today is an important moment for professional sports and in the history of the LGBT community. It is also the straightforward statement of a good man who wants no more than what so many of us seek: to be able to be who we are; to do our work; to build families and to contribute to our communities. For so many members of the LGBT community, these simple goals remain elusive.?

Collins attended Stanford with Clinton's daughter Chelsea and played in a Final Four while at the school. His twin brother, Jarron, was also a longtime NBA center who last played in the league in the 2010-11 season. Collins says he told his brother he was gay last summer.

?He was downright astounded. He never suspected. So much for twin telepathy,? Collins writes in SI. ?But by dinner that night, he was full of brotherly love. For the first time in our lives, he wanted to step in and protect me.?

Advocacy organization GLAAD released a statement from Aaron McQuade, the head of its sports program.

?Courage' and ?inspiration' are words that get thrown around a lot in sports, but Jason Collins has given both ideas a brand new context,? he said. ?We hope that his future team will welcome him, and that fans of the NBA and sports in general will applaud him. We know that the NBA will proudly support him, and that countless young LGBT athletes now have a new hero.?

As a senior at Stanford, Collins was a college roommate for about six months with then-sophomore Joe Kennedy III, who now represents Massachusetts in Congress. In his account, Collins writes that he realized he needed to go public when the Democratic congressman walked in Boston's gay pride parade last year ? and Collins decided he couldn't join him.

?I didn't doubt for a second, knowing he was gay, that he would be the one to do it,? Kennedy told the AP on Monday. ?I've never known him to look for publicity, or to look for the spotlight, but given that no one else would raise their hand, I knew he would do it.?

Added Kennedy: ?I'm so proud of him. And I'm so proud to call him a friend.?

In Monday's story, Collins writes that the Boston Marathon bombing on April 15 ?reinforced the notion that I shouldn't wait for the circumstances of my coming out to be perfect. Things can change in an instant, so why not live truthfully??

And now, Collins and Kennedy say, they will be in Boston on June 8, marching together at the city's 2013 gay pride parade.

?Some people insist they've never met a gay person. But Three Degrees of Jason Collins dictates that no NBA player can claim that anymore. Pro basketball is a family. And pretty much every family I know has a brother, sister or cousin who's gay,? Collins concludes. ?In the brotherhood of the NBA, I just happen to be the one who's out.?

Serena Williams routs Venus at Family Circle

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) ? Serena Williams routed Venus Williams 6-1, 6-2 at the Family Circle Cup on Saturday, the most one-sided match in the sisters' long rivalry.

Serena Williams won her 14th straight match at the Family Circle. The top-ranked woman will play for her second straight title in this tournament Sunday against Jelena Jankovic. Jankovic, the 2007 champion, defeated Stefanie Voegele, 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-2 in the other semifinal.

This was the first time since 2009 the Williams sisters were playing each other in a tournament. Serena has won five straight in their series and leads 14-10. Serena was encouraged to see her older sister reach the semifinals after her struggles the past 18 months in dealing with an autoimmune disease.

"We've definitely been through a lot since our last match. But, yeah, we all come together at the end and we just try to love each other like we always do," Serena said.

Serena surged to a 4-0 lead and won the first set in 22 minutes. Venus, who withdrew from her previous event because of back problems, picked up her game a bit in the second set but it was hardly enough.

The match ended when Venus misplayed Serena's final serve. The sisters shook hands at the net, neither looking overly pleased. Serena waited until her sister left the court to cheers. This victory by Serena surpassed her 6-2, 6-2 win over Venus at Miami in 2002.

The matchup drew a single-session record of 9,538 to the stadium, exceeding the previous high in 2008 who watched Serena Williams defeat Maria Sharapova in that year's quarterfinals.

The Williams sisters came off a long, grueling Friday when both had to win twice to get this far. Serena suggested that perhaps the full day of matches ? three in less than 24 hours ? took a toll on Venus.

"I mean she'll never admit it, ever, but I don't think she was 100 percent," Serena said. "But you will never get that out of her, and quite frankly, three matches for her is much tougher than three matches for me."

Still, Venus Williams was smiling when she walked into the packed stadium court for warmups. She jumped on Serena's first serve immediately to win the first point ? and it was largely downhill after that.

Serena's powerhouse serves and accurate groundstrokes rarely gave Venus room to move. Serena regularly delivered serves in excess of 100 mph that Venus couldn't handle.

Serena won the final game of the first set at love, and Venus looked out of options. When Venus did have a chance to tighten things in the second set, Serena made sure it didn't happen.

Venus won two points on Serena's serve trailing 3-2 in the second set. Serena won the next two points with serves of 107 mph and 108 mph. She followed with an ace off a 117 mph serve that Venus looked at before changing sides. Serena quickly ended the game a point later to regain control.

Still, Venus was happy with her week, if not how she played against Serena.

"You know, I've been off balance for a long time," she said. "And I'm trying to regain my balance."

NCAA Final Four preview: Louisville, WSU, Mich., and Syracuse will keep things lively

The Cardinals, Shockers, Wolverines, and Orange all average right around 70 points per game this season. Depending on your team or the style of play, college basketball fans should be entertained this weekend at the Final Four.

In the first game, scheduled to tip off just after 6 p.m. Eastern time, Louisville, the tournament's overall No. 1 seed out of the Midwest region, will meet Wichita State, a ninth seed and upstart champions of the West region.

This weekend, the 'Wheat' Shockers make their second trip to the Final Four. The last time Wichita State reached the national semifinals was 1965, when they lost to the repeating national champion UCLA Bruins.

Ironically, back in 1965, Wichita State and Louisville were both members of the Missouri Valley Conference. The Cardinals left in 1975 to join what was then called the Metro Conference and has since morphed into Conference USA.

Wichita State defeated second seed Ohio State last weekend in Los Angeles, behind the outstanding play of Regional MVP Malcolm Armstead and Cleanthony Early. Carl Hall and Tekele Cotton also have made important contributions throughout the Shockers' season.

Louisville overcame the emotionally draining injury to backup guard Kevin Ware to prevail over second seed Duke in the Midwest Region final last Sunday. Paced by the terrific play of guards Peyton Siva and Russ Smith, the Cardinals are hoping to capture the school's third national championship.

The big question in the first national semifinal: What can the Shockers do to solve the Cardinals' full-court pressure and fast-breaking offense?

What is PR and What Can It Do For You? | Inspired by This Blog

d31ebceccb29913e96089f93a8016c56?What can you do for me?? That?s the number one question I receive from people inquiring about Be Inspired PR?s services. My staff and I hear it multiple times a week, businesses call and want to know how we can get them more weddings, higher-end brides, ROI, TV segments as an ?expert? in their field, sales increases, etc. My first question back is, do you know what PR is?

What I typically find is people don?t have a full understanding of what exactly PR is and the value it provides. Perhaps the hardest part of seeing the value of PR is understanding that a lot of its value is unable to be statistically measured ? industry reputation, brand awareness and relationships.. those things definitely have an effect on the amount and type of weddings you book, but it?s not as simple to calculate.

So what is PR? When most people think of PR they immediately think of traditional press releases, email blasts and crisis management. While that certainly is part of it (albeit a very, very small part), people seem to forget that the second word in PR is ?relations.?

PR is how you treat your clients, how you write emails, keeping up with changes in your industry, being proactive, your social media identity, being smart about press submissions, ?brand messaging , handling mistakes with grace, giving back and how you treat your colleagues. Bottom line: PR is the maintenance of image and relationships between your business and the public. When you?re a small business owner, essentially everything from your daily conversations to the images you post on Instagram is PR.

No, not everyone needs full-time PR representation. And no, not everyone can afford full-time PR. But that doesn?t mean you don?t need help putting together an overall PR strategy for you brand. Or look into small-scale/collaboration opportunities. One of the worst mistakes a business owner can make is to decide not to invest, time or money, into a PR strategy.

So to answer the ?what can you do for me? question, there?s a lot a PR strategy can do for you. It can attract new business, get your work published on blogs and in magazines,? create ?buzz? around your businesses, increase your worth and put your name in front of the right people. Police turn to stolen SUV in hunt for Texas fugitives

SULPHUR SPRINGS, Texas (AP) ? The hunt for a capital murder suspect and a convicted drug offender who escaped from an East Texas jail has turned to a missing crossover SUV.

The Hopkins County Sheriff's Office says Brian Allen Tucker and John Marlin King remain at large.

Sgt. Brad Cummings says searchers are now seeking a black 2010 Saturn Vue reported stolen in Sulphur Springs Wednesday afternoon. The vehicle had Texas plates with the number CR6D425. Inside was a nickel-plated .22-caliber Derringer pistol.

The inmates fled the jail in Sulphur Springs Tuesday morning. Sulphur Springs is about 75 miles northeast of Dallas.

Tucker is awaiting trial on a capital murder charge. Cummings says he has short hair and "drop dead" tattooed on the back of his head.

King pleaded guilty last month to drug possession.

Miss. governor pulls anti-abortion activist's nomination

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) ? Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant said Monday he's withdrawing his nomination of anti-abortion activist Terri Herring of Ridgeland to the state Board of Health.

Bryant's decision came after The Associated Press questioned whether Bryant was fulfilling requirements of a state law that specifies the board's 11 members must come from certain parts of the state.

"Although this code section is unclear, Gov. Bryant will withdraw this nomination to avoid any legal uncertainty," Bryant spokesman Mick Bullock said in a statement Monday night. "It is Gov. Bryant's intention to recommend Mrs. Herring for a future position on the Board of Health when there is an opening in her district."

State law says eight Board of Health members must come from congressional districts ? two from each of the four districts. Three must come from state Supreme Court districts ? one each from northern, central and southern.

There are already enough board members from central Mississippi, where Herring lives. But with her nomination, the board would be one member short from the north.

In a statement Monday night, Herring thanked Bryant for his support and said she looks "forward to continuing to promote women's health, and healthy lifestyles as I have for the past many years."

Herring, 54, has lobbied since the mid-1980s to tighten abortion laws in Mississippi. As head of Pro Life America Network, she is pushing this year for a bill that would put new restrictions on abortion-inducing drugs.

The governor, a Republican, had tapped Herring to succeed Ellen Williams from the northern city of Senatobia. Williams lives in the northern Supreme Court district.

Confirmation to the Board of Health requires a majority of Mississippi's 52 senators. Herring's nomination had been scheduled for a vote Tuesday in the Senate Public Health Committee, before the governor withdrew it.

Sen. David Blount, D-Jackson, a member of the committee, said he had planned to vote against Herring's nomination because he had heard from OB-GYNs who were opposed to her confirmation.

"I hope the governor will consider physicians who deal with women's health, as well as public health professionals, in his next appointment," Blount said Monday.

The board oversees the state Department of Health, including appointing its director. It also approves the state health plan and sets rules and regulations for the department.

State law says the board must be made up of five currently licensed physicians with at least seven years' experience in practicing medicine. The other six members must be people "who have a background in public health or an interest in public health who are not currently or formerly licensed physicians."

Bryant nominated Herring for one of the non-physician positions on the board. Williams, who is a registered nurse and has a doctoral degree, has served on the board since 2004.

Herring said in a news release last week that she and her husband, Clint Herring, own TrustCare, a Ridgeland clinic that provides walk-in care and occupational therapy. The news release also says the Herrings, since 1984, have run Kerioth Corp., a real estate development firm that has built several upscale commercial sites in the Jackson area. The Herrings also are partners in The Club fitness centers, which is affiliated with St. Dominic Health Services.

Herring in 2012 lobbied for a state law that requires anyone performing abortions at an abortion clinic to be a physician with privileges to admit patients to a local hospital. The state's only abortion clinic, Jackson Women's Health Organization, has been unable to obtain the privileges for its out-of-state physicians. The clinic filed a federal lawsuit last summer to challenge the law, and that suit is awaiting trial.

The clinic is scheduled for an April 18 administrative hearing before the state Board of Health, to appeal the state Health Department's intent to revoke the clinic's license because of failure to obtain the admitting privileges. The clinic remains open.

Weak economic reports send stock market lower

NEW YORK (AP) ? Weak reports on hiring and service industries sent the stock market sharply lower Wednesday, giving the Dow Jones industrial average its worst day in more than a month.

The Dow fell 111.66 points, or 0.8 percent, to 14,550.35, its worst decline since Feb. 25. The Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 16.56 points, or 1.1 percent, to 1,553.69. Both indexes closed at record highs the day before.

The stock market started 2013 with a rally as investors became more optimistic about the U.S. economy, especially housing and jobs. The reports Wednesday disappointed the market and came two days after news that U.S. manufacturing growth slowed unexpectedly last month.

The losses were widespread. All 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 index fell. Banks and energy stocks had the worst losses, 1.7 percent and 1.6 percent. Utilities, which investors hold when they want to play it safe, fell the least, 0.3 percent.

"The market is overdue for a correction," said Joe Saluzzi at Themis Trading. "I don't think that the economy supports this type of a rally."

Signs of investor skittishness appeared across a number of different markets.

Commodities slumped. Crude oil dropped $2.74, or 2.8 percent, to close at $94.45 a barrel and industrial metals like copper fell.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.81 percent from 1.86 percent, the lowest level for the benchmark rate since January. The decline means investors are moving money into low-risk U.S. government debt.

The Russell 2000 index, which tracks small company stocks, fell for a third straight day, dropping 1.7 percent. It's now down 3.5 percent so far this week, far worse than the declines in the Dow, 0.2 percent, and the S&P, 1 percent. That's another signal that investors may be becoming more bearish about the U.S. economy.

Small company stocks, which did better than the Dow and the S&P 500 in the first three months of the year, are more sensitive to the outlook for the U.S. economy than the larger companies in the Dow and S&P. That's because they rely far more on domestic sales than global giants like IBM and Caterpillar, which sells heavy machinery and construction equipment around the globe.

The Dow Jones Transportation Average, an index of 20 stocks including airlines like Delta and freight companies FedEx and UPS, fell more than 1 percent for a third straight day. The index, which is regarded as a leading indicator for broader market indexes as well as the economy, has fallen 3.9 percent this week, after surging 17.9 percent in the first quarter.

U.S. service companies kept growing at a solid pace in March, but the expansion was less than economists were expecting. The Institute for Supply Management's index of service companies fell to 54.4 from 56 a month earlier. The report was the weakest in seven months.

Separately, payrolls processor ADP reported that U.S. employers added 158,000 jobs last month, down from February's gain of 237,000. The ADP report is often seen as a preview for the government's broader survey on employment, which is due out Friday.

The slowdown in hiring was due in part to construction firms holding back on adding new employees. That sent the stocks of homebuilders lower. PulteGroup fell 85 cent, or 4.3 percent, to $19.01 and D.R. Horton dropped 57 cents to $22.84.

In other trading, the Nasdaq composite fell 36.26 points, or 1.1 percent, to 3,218.60.

Even though stocks started the second quarter lower, markets typically add to their gains after ending the first quarter up, said Sam Stovall, an equity strategist at S&P Capital IQ. Using data going back over more than 60 years, Stovall says that the S&P 500 has gained an average of 9 percent from April to December after rising in the first quarter.

"Investors believe that the economic trajectory is improving," said Stovall. Stocks "do not reflect the true valuations based on where the economy will be at the end of the year."

Among stocks making big moves:

? Zynga rose 46 cents, or 15 percent, to $3.53 after the online game maker said two casino games would debut in the United Kingdom Wednesday.

? Abercrombie & Fitch rose $1.74, or 3.8 percent, to $47.20, making it the biggest percentage gainer in the S&P 500. The company said late Tuesday that it planned to expand internationally and place greater emphasis on cost control.

With warm summer days at the beach on the minds of millions of winter-weary people, scientists are reporting that use of a new water quality test this year could prevent unnecessary beach closures while better protecting the health of swimmers. A study analyzing the accuracy of the test appears in ACS' journal Environmental Science & Technology.

Meredith B. Nevers and colleagues point out that decisions on whether water is safe for recreational use have been based on tests that actually show the condition of water in the past. Those tests involve sampling water for the E. coli bacteria used as red flags for fecal contamination, putting the samples in culture dishes and waiting to see if any bacteria grow. As a result, managers might close a beach based on fecal contamination that existed in the past, but posed no current threat. Likewise, they might keep a contaminated beach open because the water was clean in the past.

They describe analysis and validation of a new rapid water-quality test that could prevent beaches from being closed by providing accurate, same-day results of bacteria levels. Developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the test's same-day results could help managers across the country determine whether beaches are safe for swimming.
