Attorney Writing and Marketing - The Crab Chronicles

I am very excited to announce that I have started a new small business called

The Write Rainmaker

Providing website copy, blogs, articles, newsletters, email blasts and more, for attorneys who want to increase their web presence and attract new clients.

I have been a paralegal since 1985, and I have a Master's degree in Creative Writing. I've been blogging for more than 7 years now, and I understand a good bit about SEO [Search Engine Optimization]. I've already been writing for several lawyers now, for a couple of years, but I am ready to expand my business.

I just launched a new blog devoted to The Write Rainmaker. Check it out!

So I've been working on some marketing materials for myself, and what I've got so far is below. I'm still working on a logo image.

What can I do?

Write weekly blog posts that will be picked up by search engines

Write and/or edit articles for the firm website

Write up case results for your website

Compose and manage email blasts to clients

Review your website and advise on ways to make the content more layman-friendly

Find speaking engagements for you so you can connect with possible clients.

Help you evaluate ways to make your website more appealing

?

Why lawyers need help with website marketing:

  1. The lawyers who stay busy are the ones who have websites picked up by Google searches, because that's how most people find lawyers now.
  2. Lawyers are in the business of practicing law, not writing for websites.?
  3. Most lawyers write like lawyers. They need someone who can understand legal lingo and convert it to simple, direct language for a layman.

Why use me?

  • 7 years as a blog writer and editor
  • 28 years experience as a paralegal
  • Master's degree in Creative Writing
  • My rates are cheaper than the companies who "specialize" in writing lawyer blogs and websites
  • I'm available to talk when it's convenient to you, not just 9-5
  • I don't require contracts or up-front payments
  • Impeccable references - you can talk to other lawyers who have used my services [for instance my friend James Radford]

I am still working on a Facebook page and new blog or website specifically for the The Write Rainmaker. In the meantime, if you know somebody who could use my services, please pass along a link to this page! Thanks!

Oh - and if you are not a lawyer but still would like me to help you write website materials or a blog, I am happy to discuss that with you!

Samsung announces new waterproof, ruggedized Xcover 2 Android phone

We've still got about a month until Mobile World Congress spills forth an untold number of unseen smartphones, but Samsung's announced something a little early. The Galaxy Xcover 2 is its new ruggedized smartphone, with GPS and GLONASS pitching it directly at the adventurers among us. It's water resistant up to a depth of one meter and can hold its breath for 30 minutes, while a 4-inch WVGA display will beam out Android 4.1. Expect to see the same Motion UI features spotted on other Samsung devices recently, including the ability to overturn and mute incoming calls. It'll be powered by an as-yet unmentioned 1GHz dual-core processor, while a 5-megapixel camera will peer out the back. There's also physical camera button to ensure you don't miss any of your underwater adventures.

Samsung mention that the Xcover 2 will also pack a Cardio trainer Pro workout app, although there doesn't appear to be any hardware additions to augment the fitness program -- aside from a strap holder. No word yet on where the phone is expected to land, nor how much the jungle-ready slab might set you back, but we'll be sure to drop it on the ground in Barcelona in a few weeks time.

The six biggest moments from the season premiere of ?The Ultimate Fighter?

The latest version of "The Ultimate Fighter" debuted on Tuesday night. For the first time in many, many seasons, I enjoyed the show. Instead of focusing on the animosity between coaches, it brought out the stories of each of the fighters. It was a welcome change. Here were the biggest moments of the two-hour premiere:

-- The opening montage: From the start, TUF looked different than it had before. The filming style felt more like an "NFL Films" production than previous TUFs. That started with the opening montage, with close-ups of the coaches, Dana White and the fighters talking about why they want to be on the show.

-- Families fighters and friends being allowed in the gym: Seeing Adam Cella's family celebrate after his win set the tone for the rest of the show. On previous TUFs, fighters would talk about their devotion to their amily and friends, but it was hard to connect with them when all we saw were pictures. Now, as the season goes on, we'll know who each man is fighting for much more richly.

-- Zak Cummings' knockout of Nik Fekete: It was so quick that I wasn't sure what happened. The replay showed Fekete didn't protect himself when throwing a kick, and that ended his show at making "The Ultimate Fighter."

-- Sonnen needling Jones over Bubba McDaniel: The "Chael Shtick" didn't come out much on Tuesday night, and that's a good thing. Over the course of the show, it would get old very quickly. But Sonnen's subtle, sarcastic picking at Jones was fun, particularly when it came to Jones' teammate and if Jones would pick him for his team.

-- "I grew up on food stamps, powdered milk and spam." With the families around, there were more tears than usual for the opening show. No episode was more moving than Kito Andrews saying goodbye to his kids, and talking about why it's so important for him to win. Unfortunately, Andrews lost the decision.

-- Uriah Hall's decision over Andy Endz: The two put on such a great fight that Sonnen stood and cheered for it. Afterwards, they shared a quiet moment where Hall thanked Endz, and Endz told Hall to win the show. It was one of the moments that reminded fans that most fighters support each other, even when they haven't met before.

What did you think of the show? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Symantec third-quarter profit beats Street, splits chairman, CEO jobs

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Symantec Corp beat earnings expectations and said it is splitting the chief executive and chairman jobs ahead of a Wednesday meeting to unveil a new strategy it hopes will end years of investor disappointment.

Symantec, the maker of Norton anti-virus software, reported profit of 45 cents per share, excluding items, for its fiscal third quarter ended December 28. That topped the average analyst estimate of 38 cents, according to a poll by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue rose 4 percent from a year earlier to $1.79 billion, beating the average view of $1.74 billion.

The company named independent director Dan Schulman to the position of non-executive chairman, replacing Steve Bennett, who will remain CEO and president.

Symantec fired CEO Enrique Salem in July, tapping then-chairman Steve Bennett to take the post. Over the course of the Salem's term as CEO, Symantec shares fell about 19 percent, while the Nasdaq Composite Index climbed about 77 percent.

Schulman, on Symantec's board since March 2000, is president of the Enterprise Growth Group at American Express Co. He also worked at Nextel Corp and AT&T Inc.

Symantec shares rose 3.3 percent to $21.55 in premarket trade.

12 Actors Who Almost Had The Part

Casting a Hollywood film takes a great deal of patience, especially when a studio's first choice turns down a role.

From "Iron Man" to "Pretty Woman," some of the biggest hits may have had a totally different look if the lead roles hadn't been passed on by other actors. We've gathered 12 major roles that were recast ? and the actors who missed out on and scored the part.

Take a look through the slideshow below to see who almost headlined these iconic films.

  • Catherine Tramell in "Basic Instinct"

One of Sharon Stone's most iconic roles was in the super sexy thriller "Basic Instinct." But she wasn't the first choice to play the mysterious Catherine Tramell.

  • The Part Almost Went To ...

"Top Gun" beauty Kelly McGillis was initially considered for the role but it ultimately went to Stone, launching her film career.

  • Johnny Castle in "Dirty Dancing"

In the classic film about a sultry romance between dance instructor Johnny Castle and Baby Houseman, Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey were the perfect pair. But another leading man almost snagged the lead male role.

  • The Part Almost Went To ...

"Top Gun" heartthrob Val Kilmer was also considered for the role of Johnny in the 1987 hit movie.

  • Jack Torrance in "The Shining"

Jack Nicholson struck fear into his own family as Jack Torrance, the psychotic father who tries to kill his wife and son. But this part almost went to another Hollywood star.

  • The Part Almost Went To ...

Robin Williams was considered for the part, which would have definitely been an interesting role for the funny man.

  • Vivian Ward in "Pretty Woman"

Julia Roberts captured hearts across the nation with her role as Richard Gere's escort turned romantic interest Vivian Ward. But this love story may have had a different look had the film's first choice accepted the role.

  • The Part Almost Went To ...

Molly Ringwald was first offered the part but turned it down, making way for Roberts to perform one of her most memorable roles.

  • Clarice Starling in "Silence of the Lambs"

Jodie Foster won a Golden Globe and Oscar for her portrayal as Clarice Starling, an FBI agent responsible for getting assistance from Hannibal Lecter, a demented psychopath played by Anthony Hopkins. But Foster wasn't the first pick for the role.

  • The Part Almost Went To ...

Michelle Pfeiffer was first offered the role, but she turned it down due to its violent storyline.

  • Indiana Jones in "Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark"

Harrison Ford is best known for his role as the fearless archaeologist Indiana Jones. But that runaway boulder was almost chasing another leading man.

  • The Part Almost Went To ...

The film's writer and producer George Lucas was set on Tom Selleck as Jones, but Steven Spielberg pushed for Ford.

  • Neo in "The Matrix"

Keanu Reeves scored a huge win after being cast as Neo in the science fiction hit film "The Matrix." But Reeves initially had a little competition for the part.

  • The Part Almost Went To ...

Ewan McGregor was first cast at Neo but decided to turn down the film to play Obi-Wan Kenobe in "Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menance."

  • Maximus in "Gladiator"

Russell Crowe won an Oscar for his performance as Maximus in the hit film "Gladiator." But there was another Aussie actor who was initially considered for the part.

  • The Part Almost Went To ...

Mel Gibson was offered the role but turned it down.

  • Cher Horowitz in "Clueless"

Alicia Silverstone seemed to perfectly embody the Beverly Hills High student, matchmaker and popular girl Cher Horowitz in the 90s classic "Clueless." A 90s television favorite was first considered for the part, though.

  • The Part Almost Went To ...

Sarah Michelle Geller was initially offered the role but passed on the film. The movie went on to launch Silverstone's career.

  • Jack Dawson in "Titanic"

Leonardo DiCaprio struck gold when he was cast as the love interest of Kate Winslet in the mega hit "Titanic." But had the studio had its choice, another Hollywood hottie would have played the role of Jack Dawson.

  • The Part Almost Went To ...

Matthew McConaughey was the first choice for the role of Jack. But in the end, Leo was cast and Jack and Rose were etched into the memories of hopeless romantics around the world.

  • Forrest Gump in "Forrest Gump"

Tom Hanks may have been down one Oscar and Golden Globe win if the studio's first choice for Forrest Gump had accepted the role.

  • The Part Almost Went To ...

John Travolta turned down the part, making way for a memorable performance and even more memorable quotes from Hanks.

  • Tony Stark in "Iron Man"

Robert Downey Jr. played billionaire Tony Stark in both "Iron Man" and "Iron Man 2." But he wasn't the first choice for the role.

  • The Part Almost Went To ...

Tom Cruise was offered the role first but ultimately turned it down due to issues with the script.

London exhibit features dozens of Manet portraits

LONDON (AP) ? A new exhibition is bringing the works of French Impressionist master Edouard Manet to London ? although snow is delaying one painting's arrival.

The Royal Academy show focuses on Manet's portraits, with paintings of the artist, his family and famous friends, including artist Claude Monet and writer Emile Zola.

More than 50 works are to be exhibited, but one was missing from Tuesday's press preview.

"The Amazon" ? a portrait of a woman on horseback ? has been held up by snow-related delays at Heathrow airport, where hundreds of flights have been canceled.

It is on loan from Brazil's Museu de Sao Paulo Assis Chateaubriand.

Officials are confident the painting will arrive before the exhibition opens on Saturday.

"Manet: Portraying Life" runs in London through April 14.

Close Encounter of Jupiter and Moon Wows Stargazers

A night sky meeting of Jupiter and the moon, called a conjunction, amazed skywatchers around the world last night (Jan. 21).

The waxing gibbous moon and Jupiter ? the two brightest objects in last night's sky ? appeared to be almost touching for part of the night before the moon crept below and past the gas giant, continuing on in its orbit.

Judging by the reactions of SPACE.com readers, the celestial pairing was a hit. Skywatchers from all over the world sent in photos of the moon and Jupiter in their own back yards, but it wasn't always easy to get the shot. [Gallery: Jupiter and the Moon Dazzle Stargazers]

"One of the most challenging things I've ever shot," Greg Diesel Walck in North Carolina wrote in an email. "Had to strap my tripod onto a pole so that it could be tilted back so far and duck tape my zoom lens so it would stay fully zoomed!? Also a very windy night as a cold front moves into N.C. making for tricky long exposures."

Weather was an issue for some observers, too.

"Snow flurries were rushing in from the northwest, so I had to wait to get shots between the clouds," Eric Teske of Bowling Green, Ohio wrote to SPACE.com. "When the clouds parted, I was able to grab two photos for a clean composite. I was out for about 20 minutes total and couldn't feel my fingers as I was packing up my gear and rushing back into my apartment!"

Some readers were caught by surprise when they looked up at the sky last night.

"I just went outside tonight to take a look at the stars," wrote Barbara Ash of Ridgecrest, Calif., "and saw an object in conjunction with the moon. I ran back in and grabbed my tripod and camera, and took some amateur shots."

And the sight wowed beyond North America, too.

"Partly cloudy evening and night here in central Italy, but the conjunction show was still captivating," Giuseppe Petricca wrote.

"They are close!" Christiane Lisboa wrote from Brazil.

In case you missed it, yesterday's conjunction won't be the last time Jupiter and the moon have a seemingly close encounter. On March 17, the two heavenly bodies will appear in the same part of the sky again.

Editor's Note: If you took a photo of last night's close conjunction of the moon and Jupiter that you'd like to share with SPACE.com for a possible story or gallery, please send it, along with your comments, to spacephotos@space.com.

The economics of Batman - Business & Economics News ...

Dr Mike Pottenger, Economics lecturer, has performed a study on the economics of Batman and found that he costs approximately $900,000 US per year. He believes that for the same sum the city could afford approximately 30 Spidermen. Pottenger also believes that removing Victoria Police and replacing them with Batman would not be a viable alternative for solving real-world crime, he told Red Symons on Breakfast today.

How to Find a Business Consulting Recruiter

by admin on January 21, 2013

Many business consulting job hunters hope that they can get the attention of a business consulting recruiter. If you are one those jobseekers, you may wish to figure out some of the best way to find a recruiter and find your next business consulting job through a recruiter.

Here are some ways you can get on a business consulting recruiter?s radar and have them helping you find your next job.

Network ? Like everything related to getting your next business consulting job, networking is imperative.? This is true for finding a recruiter as well. Recruiters network at professional groups, conventions, and through social media. You are sure to connect with a recruiter if you attend these events and become active online.

Connect Online ? Whether you are using Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn, you want to find business consulting recruiters and connect through your LinkedIn profile or follow them on Twitter. Find a company you are interested in, look at their Facebook page, and then see if there are recruiters that are on there. Another thought is connecting through recruiters that might be from your alma mater. Don?t be afraid to use your school social media pages when looking for recruiters with which to network.

Keywords ? Use keywords appropriate for the position you are interested in when writing your resume, cover letters, and basic networking correspondence will help you get the attention of the right recruiters.? Just be sure not to sound too phony when using keywords. Add them naturally to your correspondence.

Referrals ? Don?t forget the usefulness of referrals. You can ask around to other colleagues, classmates, and professional mentors if they have a referral to a business consulting recruiter that you might contact. This can be an excellent way to get your foot in the door with a recruiter. Having a recommendation can look favorably on you as well.

Whether you are new to the job hunt, or looking to re-enter the workforce after some time, finding a good business consulting recruiter is an excellent way for you to maximize your job search efforts and find a job in the shortest amount of time.

HBT: Few could match 'Stan the Man'

Stan Musial?s name doesn?t dot the record books anywhere near as frequently as those of Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds. Still, for consistent greatness, perhaps no one matched Stan the Man, who passed away Saturday at age 92.

- Excluding his one-year absence due to military service in 1945, Musial, who spent his entire career with the Cardinals, hit .310 or better every year from 1942 to 1958. That?s age 21 to age 37. He qualified for the NL batting title all 16 of those seasons, finishing first seven times, second twice, third four times, fourth twice and fifth once. He also finished third in 1962 at age 41.

- In addition to his seven batting titles, he led the NL in OBP six times, in slugging six times and in OPS seven times.

- He led the league in runs scored five times, hits six times, doubles eight times, triples five times, RBI twice, walks once and games played five times.

- He did all this while never striking out more than 46 times in a season. He finished his career with 1,599 walks and just 696 strikeouts.

- Musial played in 24 All-Star Games (in 20 seasons), tying Willie Mays for the most of all-time.

- Even 50 years after his retirement, Musial ranks 2nd all-time in total bases (6,134), 4th all-time in hits (3.630), 30th in average (.331), 22nd in OBP (.417), 19th in slugging (.559), 13th in OPS (.976), ninth in runs (1,959), sixth in RBI (1,951) third in doubles (725), 19th in triples (177), 28th in homers (475) and 13th in walks.

- Advanced stats: Musial ranks 12th all-time in Baseball-Reference?s WAR, ninth among position players. He?s third in runs created (2,562) and his OPS+ of 159 ranks 15th.

- Only Barry Bonds, with seven MVPs, has been more successful in the MVP balloting. Musial is one of eight players with three MVPs, and he has four second-place finishes to go along with them.

- Musial wasn?t particularly productive in the World Series, but his Cardinals teams won three of the four in which he played. He hit .256/.347/.395 with one homers and eight RBI in his 23 postseason games.

Musial ended up playing 21 full seasons, plus his 12 games as a 20-year-old in 1941. Never once did he finished with an OPS+ under 100. He ranked among the NL?s best hitters at both 21 and 41. He hit .300 18 times. Only Aaron, with 15, had more seasons with 300 total bases than Musial?s 13. Only Bonds, Ruth and Ted Williams, with 18 each, had more seasons with .900 OPSs than Musial?s 17.

Musial may have missed some milestones in finishing with 475 homers and 1,951 RBI, but his status as one of baseball?s very best hitters is cemented. The awesome nickname probably doesn?t hurt.

Someone You Should Know: Cancer Survivor, Fundraiser Bob Lee ...

(CBS) ? He?s a retired cancer survivor who spends his time riding his bike for miles and miles to raise money for charity.

Bob Lee of Barrington is someone you should know, CBS 2?s Harry Porterfield reports.

For Lee, riding a stationary bike is just a substitute for the real thing.

?I?m more of a peddler, and I have a message to pedal,? he says.

Since he retired, he?s been riding to raise money for charity. In 2001, he racked up 3,254 miles and raised $89,000. More recently, he rode 2,000 miles and raised $875,000.

?I?ve ridden 12,000 miles, and I haven?t run into a bad person in this country,? Lee says.

Lee, 70, is retired. The money he generates is going to hospice care, the American Cancer Society and the Les Turner ALS Foundation.

?We?ve really never met anybody like Bob Lee before who is so giving and so passionate,? foundation director Wendy Abrahms says.

Between 2001 and 2007, Lee interrupted his fundraising to deal with his own medical problems. Both he and his wife are cancer survivors.

He credits previous fundraisers for helping further the cause of cancer research ? in effect, saving his life.

?Someone came up with the research and support that made me a cancer survivor,? Lee says. ?How fortunate am I to be able to do this.?

Four weeks after surgery, he was back on his bike to continue the fund raising effort all at his own expense.

?What gives me the drive is the passion for people that can?t, to think of people going through radiation and chemo ? they give me the pedal power,? Lee says.

'Red October' is latest super cyberspy virus, firm says

By Bob Sullivan, Columnist, NBC News

A Russian computer security firm says it has uncovered a?new, far-ranging cyberspying campaign that targets government secrets. The firm, Kaspersky Labs, has tantalizing named the malicious software behind the attack "Red October," a nod to the famous Tom Clancy novel.

Red October has been attempting to steal critical, secret documents since at least 2007, Kaspersky said in a report posted to its website Monday.? It's designed to defeat a common encryption scheme that's used by NATO and government agencies, Kaspersky says. It's also capable of stealing data from mobile phones, and has a "resurrection" module that allows the program to reinstall itself even if detected and removed.

"During the past five years, a high-level cyber-espionage campaign has successfully infiltrated computer networks at diplomatic, governmental and scientific research organizations, gathering data and intelligence from mobile devices, computer systems and network equipment," Kaspersky says in its report.

Kaspersky, which claims to have found?several similar cyberattacks over the past two years, didn't identify the original source of its discovery, or the identity of organizations infected by the program. The firm said it is working the US-CERT, the cybersecurity arm of the U.S. government, and other national cyber-defense teams to continue its investigation and to help mitigate the attacks.

Kaspersky has made a name for itself by disclosing a series of programs that appear to be part of focused cyberattacks against government entities, beginning with the infamous Flame virus, allegedly designed to attack computers inside Iran.

Red October infections aren't widespread, the firm says -- only "several hundred" have been found so far.? But the virus isn't designed for high infection rates, but rather to spy on specific, high-value targets, it said. The highest infection rates were in Russia, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, Kaspersky said, suggesting Eastern Europe and former Soviet republics were the main targets of the virus writers. There were a handful of infections in Belgium, the U.S., and Switzerland, however, hinting that the virus writers might not be driven by geopolitics.

In fact, unlike Flame, Kaspersky said there is no evidence that a nation-state is behind the program, leading it to speculate that for-profit hackers were behind it.

"Such information could be traded in the underground and sold to the highest bidder, which can be, of course, anywhere," the firm said in a report.

The also firm said it saw no connection between the authors of Flame and Red October.

The program itself is a bit of a Frankenstein, borrowing code and attack strategies from earlier viruses. Spear-phishing emails -- specially crafted, booby-trapped emails designed to infect a single user -- opened the door to victims' machines, and were copied from attacks used against Tibetan activists, it said. Other code in the virus suggests the writers borrowed heavily from Chinese hackers, too. Vulnerabilities used to actually control the target machine were borrowed from Conficker, discovered in 2008, which remains one of the most widespread viruses over the past five years. Its origin has never been definitively determined, but many researchers speculate it was written by Ukrainians. But the program itself uses several Russian words, and Kaspersky believes its authors were Russian speakers.?

Also telling: When hackers get control of a target machine, and obtain a command prompt which can be used to issue commands, it is ordered to render Cyrillic fonts --?used in the alphabets of Russia and other?languages in parts of the Balkans and Northern Eurasia.

That doesn't mean Red October was created by Russians, however.

Red October -- so named because of the Russian words discovered in the virus code -- has several other unique characteristics suggesting the authors were attempting a wide-ranging espionage campaign. For example, infected computers constantly searched for users connecting a smartphone, after which the virus would raid the device for useful information.

"Once connected, (Red October is instructed to) retrieve information about the phone, its phone book, contact list, call history, calendar, SMS messages, browsing history," the report says.

The virus also searches constantly for connection of a USB thumb drive and, once detected, scans that device for files to steal, too.

Cyberwarfare, including digital espionage such as that allegedly carried out by Red October, has been long predicted by computer security experts. A number of high-profile discoveries recently appear to be confirming those predictions. The most famous is Stuxnet, discovered in June 2010, which targeted Iranian critical infrastructure and was ultimately attributed to Israeli and American programmers by the New York Times.? Kaspersky did not initially discover Stuxnet -- a small Belarusian firm is credited with that -- but it did issue the first detailed report on Stuxnet's capabilities.

H.D. Moore, chief security officer of security firm Rapid7 and creator of the popular security testing software Metasploit, told NBC News on Monday that he was able to independently confirm some of what Kaspersky said in its report, including identifying several so-called "command and control" servers used by Red October hackers to contact compromised machines.

This is not on the same level as the Flame virus," he said, "but it does some scary things."

Among the capabilities that interested Moore: Red October's ability to undelete files that had been deleted from USB drives.? That creates all sorts of potential nightmares for security professionals at high-security agencies.?

"We hadn't seen that before in malware," Moore said. ?The threat is that USB drives are often shared between people, especially at conferences. Even if you take precautions to delete files and you trust the person you are sharing this with, this malware would be able to automatically recover deleted files and siphon them off without either party being aware.?

Other techniques in the virus show it was designed mainly "to gather as many documents as possible," rather than attempting to infiltrate a single machine or steal a single file. Given the wide net cast by Red October, which was hardly subtle, Moore said he was "surprised it got as far as it did" before being discovered.?

Urban baby blog: My family is sick with the flu and I'm losing my mind

When it comes to health, I?ve always been pretty lucky. Flu season always passed over my apartment. Friends, family, and neighbors would get sick year after year and I would be fine. I never got flu shots either. The first and last time I got the flu was when I was seven. Aside from the occasional common cold, and that one time I got food poisoning, I never got really sick ever again.

Then I had a kid.

It?s a vicious cycle. Adi gets sick from somebody at the playground. Then Adi gets me sick. Then Adi gets my mother sick. My mother gets my father sick. I get Mike sick. Mike gets Adi sick again. Adi gets me sick again, and I can?t call my mother for backup because she?s already sick. I?m stuck inside all day now, so Adi and I trade worse and worse mutations of the same disease back and forth for a couple of weeks. When it all passes, Adi gets sick from someone at library story time.

Flu season lasts for months around here.

I?ll never be healthy (or leave my apartment) again.

Let?s say your child is sick. Really sick. Not hospital level sick, but vomiting and sneezing everywhere, and terribly grumpy sick. Three phone calls an hour to the pediatrician sick.

How do you entertain? her? How do you entertain yourself? How many Disney movies can you watch in a row before your IQ starts to drop? How many Blue?s Clues do you have to solve before you start feeling good about yourself again?

I can solve Blue?s Clues after the first clue now. I found three plot holes in Yo Gabba Gabba. I?m turning into one of those mindless TV 24/7 addicts everyone talks about. All TV and no work makes Rachel an insane stay-at-home-mom stereotype.

I can?t go outside. I can?t even watch the news. Adi has total control over media consumption. If I even think about watching something without bright colors and alphabet songs Adi starts screaming.

If Chris Matthews could incorporate puppets and some current events based alphabet songs into his show I would be eternally grateful. A is for Abortion rights. B is for Barack Obama. C is for Chuck Hagel. D is for Debt Ceiling! It?ll be great.

And then there?s the medication.

Adi hates taking medication. She hits. She scratches. She?ll force me to force her mouth open. It doesn?t matter what the medication tastes like. It could taste like bubblegum, or rainbows, or cupcakes sprinkled with the ground up bones of unicorns. She won?t take it. I swear she throws it up on purpose. Since it?s so important for her to take medication now, I have to make sure it stays inside her. So what does that mean?

It means medicated suppositories.

I literally had to shove medication up her a**. As you can imagine, I was dreading it. How the hell am I going to explain to a medication averse toddler that I have to stick a vegetable glycerine bullet up her butt? Someone told me to just do it, and not tell her. That didn?t seem right to me. If somebody was about t shove something up me, I?d want a heads up.

So, when it came time for a diaper change, I told Adi that after I was done wiping her, I would be putting a suppository up her butt. She just nodded. I figured she didn?t understand. I braced myself for a kick in the throat and stuck it in.

Adi didn?t resist. After everything was?in there, she got up and ran to play with her toys.

They should make suppository versions of everything.

I found myself standing there offering prayers of thanks to the merciful G-d who saw it fit to make my child okay with suppositories. It?s the little things.

And then I read the part of the New York Times that nobody threw up on.

If you have flu symptoms stay away from moms. Please. Wash your hands every time you see a sink, coat yourself in hand sanitizer, spray that disinfecting stuff on everything you touch and cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Until we have a cure for the flu, just stay home. If you?re a pediatrician please consider having wi-fi in your waiting room.

Also, if we had paid sick leave in my city, I probably wouldn?t get sick so often. Just throwing that out there.

With all the pressure to strike the right style note at the Golden Globes ? the kickoff to Hollywood's award season ? Claire Danes had one more: a post-baby body.

"I am very strapped into this dress. It's Versace and they are masters of illusions," she said after her win Sunday for best actress in a TV drama. She wore a plunging red dress just a month after giving birth to her son.

Danes was one of many sirens in red on the red carpet, including Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta and Jennifer Lawrence and Marion Cotillard both in strapless coral gowns by Dior Haute Couture.

Also in Versace ? in a less-loved look ? was Halle Berry in a one-shoulder printed gown with a fuchsia-and-blush print. A floral ballgown by Carolina Herrera worn by Lucy Liu was another unconventional choice sure to become water-cooler fodder.

Among those wearing blush-colored gowns were Megan Fox ? another new mom ? in Dolce & Gabbana and Amy Adams in Marchesa. And there were lots of attention-getting sheer looks, including Jennifer Lopez's seemingly barely there gown by Zuhair Murad.

Other sure-to-be-noticed gowns were Jessica Chastain's seafoam green Calvin Klein, Julianne Moore in Tom Ford and Katharine McPhee in a plunging black V-neck by Olivier Theyskens for Theory. Anne Hathaway went for an unfussy beaded white look by Chanel while Sofia Vergara veered a little from her signature mermaid gown but kept her va-va-voom.

For the Alpine press. The ICS X7HD on display in Alpine???s traditional, and well appointed, exhibit location in the ???N??? Rooms at CES.

Torrance, CA (01.14.2013) ? Alpine Electronics of America, Inc. introduced a new receiver with connectivity options to several cloud-based content sources. The ICS-X7HD in-dash app-receiver is the first of its kind for the company and was recognized with an Innovations award in the In-Vehicle Audio category at the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, held Jan. 8-11 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

?Alpine is excited to introduce the ICS-X7HD as the company?s first product to serve as a content aggregator of entertainment and information apps,? said Steve Crawford, vice president and general manager, aftermarket business unit, Alpine Electronics of America, Inc. ?The ICS-X7HD paves the way for other products that will bring the vast amount of cloud content into the vehicle in a relevant and safe manner.?

The ICS-X7HD is a mechless AV receiver with a 7-inch WVGA touchscreen. It comes with a built-in HD Radio? receiver and advanced Bluetooth? Plus with advanced audio streaming. Its strength lies in its ability to harness cloud-based content including:

Eyes Free Mode ? Apple integrates Siri, the intelligent assistant that helps you get things done just by asking, and the much-anticipated Eyes Free Mode into the ICS-X7HD. Through the ICS-X7HD system, customers with a compatible iPhone?* running iOS 6 can direct Siri to perform a number of tasks while they safely keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel. To further minimize distraction, Siri takes hands-free functionality even further with an Eyes Free mode which enables you to interact with your iPhone? using nothing more than your voice while keeping your device?s screen from lighting up.

alpine_logoAha radio ? Aha by HARMAN? can be launched through the iPhone? on the ICS-X7HD. Aha aggregates thousands of apps, giving drivers access to everything from web-based music, news, social media, podcasts, audio books and live weather information, to a customizable ?Hungry? and ?Hotel? station of nearby restaurants and hotels. Users simply install the free Aha App on their iPhone? to access the Aha content. When the iPhone? is connected to the ICS-X7HD via USB, the driver can store the phone and enjoy and control Aha directly from the ICS-X7HD.

MirrorLink ? MirrorLink takes the content from compatible smartphones and ?mirrors? this information onto the ICS-X7HD?s 7-inch screen. At this point, the phone?s functions are transferred to the ICS-X7HD, for easy control from the dash and allowing the phone to be safely stored away. Phone functions that can be used via MirrorLink include navigation, music streaming and hands-free phone calls. MirrorLink is an automotive standard developed by the Car Connectivity Consortium; additional phone models will be compatible with the MirrorLink standard in the future.

The ICS-X7HD has a smartphone-like user interface. Familiar operations such as ?drag and drop? to move icons on the screen, swipe and slide control of on-screen functions, and animated transitions between functions make it easy to grasp the use of the product. Favorite apps can be quickly accessed with a short press of the Home key, or a press and hold of the Home key brings up all available functions of the ICS-X7HD.

Additional entertainment and information sources accessible on the ICS-X7HD include Pandora? internet radio control, SiriusXM compatibility (requires tuner and subscription, sold separately), full music control from an iPod? or iPhone?, and the App Direct mode for basic control and operation of iPhone? apps. The ICS-X7HD will be available at authorized Alpine retailers in March.

Apple Cuts Orders for iPhone Parts

Article Excerpt

Apple Inc. has cut its orders for components for the iPhone 5 due to weaker-than-expected demand, people familiar with the situation said Monday.

Apple's orders for iPhone 5 screens for the January-March quarter, for example, have dropped to roughly half of what the company had previously planned to order, two of the people said.

The Cupertino, Calif., company has also cut orders for components other than screens, according to one of the people.

Apple notified the suppliers of the order cut last month, the people said.

The move indicates that sales of the new iPhone haven't been as strong ...

How to save money on your smartphone bill when you travel

5 hrs.

Q. I'm planning a trip abroad and I want to be able to use my smartphone without racking up an enormous bill. What's the best way to save money and stay in contact while traveling internationally??

A.?Your smartphone provider loves to charge high rates for international roaming. The charges, to some extent, are understandable because they don't necessarily have infrastructure where you're traveling. That said, charges are higher than you want to pay and, in some cases, much higher than they ought to be. With a few adjustments and tricks, you can communicate on the cheap without a problem.

Get a pay-as-you-go SIM

Although you can't sign up for a full smartphone contract for a short trip abroad (or, at least, you wouldn't want to), you can get a pay-as-you-go SIM card from most providers if you have a device that supports one.?

In the U.S., we have two primary types of technologies used by carriers: CDMA (Verizon and Sprint) and GSM (AT&T and T-Mobile). Because the majority of the rest of the world uses GSM, you need a smartphone that supports it if you're going to be able to use a SIM card.?

Even if you have a CDMA carrier, some devices still support GSM nonetheless. These are known as "world phones" and describe few devices. Regardless of your provider, you'll need a GSM-capable phone if you want to take advantage of a local SIM card when traveling.

On top of that, you'll want your international provider to support the same cellular frequencies, or bands, as your phone. Basically, AT&T and T-Mobile use the same technologies for 3G service but through different bands. By searching for the technical specifications of your phone, you can find out which bands it supports. You'll then want to find an international carrier that uses those bands for their 3G service, otherwise coverage will be less than ideal and often slow.

When traveling internationally, you have a lot to consider before you even get to the problem of price. Once you find a compatible carrier, however, you can easily pick up an inexpensive pay-as-you-go SIM card and stick it in your smartphone for use. That is, barring one more problem: your phone must be carrier unlocked.?

If you purchased your phone on contract, chances are it is locked to your carrier. In some cases you can ask your carrier to unlock your phone for travel purposes, but often times this will come at a cost. In the end, a pay-as-you-go SIM card is a great way to save money but the many requirements to make this option worthwhile will restrict most people (in the U.S., at least).

Get a pay-as-you-go, Wi-Fi hotspot

If the above method seems like far too much work, you can save yourself some grief by simply picking up a pay-as-you-go Wi-Fi hotspot from a carrier abroad.

?This will allow you to use your phone's Wi-Fi to connect to the hotspot and freely use data without paying any international roaming charges. If you need to make calls, setting up a VOIP number won't take much work. Skype is the obvious choice, as it supports most smartphones and offers inexpensive calling to pretty much any location.?

Google Talk, on the other hand, costs you nothing for Google Voice Chat if calling the United States or Canada. GrooVe IP for Android and a combination of Google Voice and Talkatone for iOS will get the job done.

The downside to this option, of course, is that your connectivity relies on the hotspot. For data usage, this won't feel much differently. Calls, on the other hand, will drop more easily when you're moving about because VOIP doesn't recover from dropouts like traditional cellular calls can.?

Additionally, you'll have two devices to charge: the hotspot and your smartphone. Often times the hotspot won't last quite as long as your smartphone will and you'll need to spend a bit of time thinking about power management throughout the day.?

Finally, although you can sometimes rent a hotspot as a traveler, you may have to buy one. They aren't exactly cheap and can quickly approximate the cost of roaming charges. Research providers and contact them in advance so you can find out your options before you travel.

Get a temporary local phone

Just as you can often rent a hotspot, carriers offer rental devices for traveler who only require temporary communications. While this means getting another number, and generally a local one, you can use your own smartphone over Wi-Fi for everything else.

In fact, if your rental phone has Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities you can use it to provide data to your smartphone and reap the benefits described in the section above. Carrying around two phones isn't perfect, but if you want to save money you often have to make a concession or two.

Sign up for a global traveler plan

If?you're planning on traveling for a month or more, check with your cellular provider about a global traveler plan. Almost every carrier has one (e.g. AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint, T-Mobile).?

Basically, the plan costs you a nominal monthly fee for access to discounted roaming rates. If you plan to use your phone a lot when abroad, you can save a decent chunk of change with a plan like this. That said, the savings aren't enormous. Going directly through your provider will still cost you more money than the aforementioned options. In the end, you'll be paying extra for convenience but that convenience may be preferable over longer trips.

Depending on where you're traveling, however, you may have the option of adding free calling to and from that destination specifically. U.S. travelers visiting Canada or M?xico, for example, can often take advantage of a plan add-on that costs a nominal monthly fee with no additional roaming or international calling charges. The same goes for many European countries. Depending on the carrier and the countries, an additional fee may not even be required. Before jumping on a global traveler plan, make sure your carrier doesn't offer a better option for the specific place you're traveling.

With these options, you should find at least one way to reduce the cost of using your smartphone while traveling abroad. It's never a cheap endeavor, but with a little effort you can cut costs and have a better, less-expensive trip.?

Fleksy Eyes-Free Mobile Keyboard Comes To Android At CES 2013 [Video]

Fleksy, the new mobile keyboard that debuted on iOS back in August, was showing its stuff at CES this year. The trick of automatically predicting what you?re typing without requiring much more than your relative tap position and word length is no less impressive than it has been in the past, but Fleksy now has a new trick up its sleeve, too: an Android version that can actually replace your stock keyboard, something that isn?t possible on iOS.

Fleksy also adds a space bar to its default, extremely sparse UI as part of making the move to Android, which can be optionally hidden if the user so chooses. Likewise, you can actually make it so that the entire keyboard chrome itself disappears and you can type using the trademark Fleksy no-look method. The Android version is still in limited beta, however, so you?ll have to sign up and wait to get let in by the Fleksy development team.

The tech takes a little getting used to, but only because it?s so?intuitive? I found myself typing nonsense to see what it would come up with instead of just trying to make actual words. It?s also almost like you can?t quite bring yourself to trust Fleksy to get things right, which makes you slow down, but after a little while it?s clear this is much better than your standard input methods and predictive text engines.

On iOS, Fleksy is really little more than a tech demo, since it can?t be used to replace the default keyboard. Android is the platform where it?ll really shine, so it?ll be interesting to see what kind of response the beta receives from users.

East Carolina University sues Cisco over slogan

(Reuters) - East Carolina University (ECU) has filed a lawsuit against Cisco Systems Inc over the use of its registered trademark "Tomorrow Starts Here", which is central to the network equipment company's new marketing campaign.

The university said on Friday that it is seeking damages for unauthorized use of the trademark, which it said is "a university-wide brand that represents an overlapping field of goods and services when compared with that of Cisco".

"ECU has used the mark 'Tomorrow Starts Here' for over a decade, including in national advertisements and publications such as Forbes and Wired," Chancellor Steve Ballard said in a statement.

Cisco kicked off a $100 million marketing campaign using the slogan on December 10 in an effort to position itself as a broader information technology company as it seeks to expand its software and services offerings.

"Tomorrow Starts Here is our new tagline, we're going to have a global integrated campaign with print and television advertising, a lot of digital marketing, social media, public relations, a whole integrated approach to this," Cisco's brand chief Blair Christie told TheStreet.com last month.

Cisco had previously used the tagline "The human network".

The company was not immediately available for comment.

Tattooed artist runs for Czech president

PRAGUE (AP) ? He's tattooed from head to toe, a warrior-like mix of blue, green and red.

He's also running in a surprising third place ahead of this week's Czech presidential elections.

Vladimir Franz, an opera composer and painter, seems the most unlikely of candidates for a prestigious post previously held by beloved playwright-dissident Vaclav Havel and Vaclav Klaus, a professor credited with plotting the economic transition from communism to a free market.

Some have a nickname for Franz: 'Avatar.' And during a televised debate a caller compared him to "an exotic creature from Papua New Guinea."

But he's not short of admirers in a country where voters are increasingly tired of politicians they say are corrupt and failing to deliver on years of promises, more than two decades after the fall of communism.

Franz has no political experience and confesses to little knowledge of economics. He says he only threw his hat in the ring after a group of admirers established the Franz for President initiative and begged him to shake up the race through his shock factor. But he's stirred up such goodwill that a leading economist offered his services for free and his campaign workers are also volunteers.

He's only spent $25,000 from donations on his campaign and hasn't put up any posters.

Franz burst onto the political scene with an eye-catching 88,000 signatures at the end of 2012 ? far more than the 50,000 required by law.

Not affiliated with any party, he has campaigned mostly on a platform highlighting graft, the importance of education and the nation's moral standing.

"The (political) system is so enchanted with itself that it's lost the ability to self-reflect," he said in an interview with The Associated Press Tuesday. Czechs, he says, "are fed up with this crap."

He's proven particularly popular with young voters ? and those not yet eligible to cast a ballot. In a mock presidential election at 441 high schools across the country a month before the vote, Franz won by a landslide, garnering more than 40 percent of some 60,000 votes.

He's tipped to win around 11 percent in the first round on Friday and Saturday ? not enough to make the runoffs. But he may end up kingmaker as the leading candidates ? former prime ministers Jan Fischer and Milos Zeman ? would be eager to pick up his following if the vote goes to a second round.

Karel Strachota, who organized the school ballot, said young people no longer identify with existing parties.

Franz is seen as "a candidate who is not tainted by politics," Strachota said. "They look with sympathy at his nonconformity and the way he presents himself."

And, perhaps surprisingly, few take issue with his tattoos.

"Personally, I wouldn't vote for him ? but (the tattoos) are not a problem at all," said Tomas Pistora, a 33-year-old IT specialist from Prague. "The young people prefer him because they don't have a better choice."

Many Czechs, especially in the capital, simply aren't shocked with Franz's look because the face of the 53-year-old professor at Prague's Academy of Performing Arts has been around for years.

"The tattoo doesn't make any difference," said Jakub Fisera, a student in Prague, adding a lack of experience in politics was more an issue.

Franz calls his tattoos body art. His face is a riot of green and red swirls against a background of blue. On his hands is a portrait of Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu, on his chest the crucified Christ.

"A tattoo is a sign of a free will and that does not harm the freedom of anyone else," he says.

For the first time, the Czech president will be elected in a popular vote ? a new system that makes it possible for independent candidates like Franz to run for the largely ceremonial post.

Vaclav Klaus, the incumbent, opposed the change. He called it "a fatal mistake" and said he feared the likes of Franz might succeed him.

A total of nine candidates are running. Unlike the Euro-skeptic Klaus who attacked the EU at every opportunity, the favorites, Zeman and Fischer, have a more moderate approach to the bloc which the country joined in 2004.

Zeman, the leftist premier in 1998-02, leads the polls with about 25 percent support. Fischer, a centrist and a former state bureaucrat, gained significant popularity when he led a caretaker government in 2009-10. He polls at about 20 percent.

As the campaign approached its end on Tuesday, eight candidates were busy on the stump. The ninth ? Franz ? had other matters to deal with: a final rehearsal of his opera "War with the Newts" at the State Opera.

Torn between art and politics, Franz cut short his appearance at an election debate to return to the opera house that is part of Prague's National Theater.

But he committed to staying to the end of Thursday's final televised debate. It wasn't an easy choice, but he realized his credibility demanded that he take part.

"For a Czech composer to have a world premiere in the National Theater is something extraordinary. I had to make a choice between a service to the public and the fulfillment of my life-long dream. I've made the choice and will be at the debate."
