Goaltenders steal show in Canada?s win over U.S. at world juniors

UFA, Russia ? Canadian goaltender Malcolm Subban had his best game of the world junior hockey championship so far in a 2-1 win over the United States on Sunday.

The Belleville Bulls goaltender made 36 saves for Canada, who are unbeaten in three games and face host Russia on New Year?s Eve for first place in Pool B.

The winner gets a bye to the semifinal, while the loser must play in a quarter-final. Russia is currently second in the pool at 2-0-1.

Monday?s game will feature the first overall picks from the last two NHL drafts.

The Edmonton Oilers made Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of Burnaby, B.C., their No. 1 selection in 2011 and chose Russian forward Nail Yakupov first this year. Both are captains of their respective countries in the tournament.

Nugent-Hopkins and Ryan Strome scored in the first period for Canada against the Americans (1-2), who need to beat Slovakia on Monday to earn a playoff berth.

Subban made several key saves as Canada was outshot 37 to 32 in the game. Canada was minus forwards Boone Jenner and J.C. Lipon, who both served suspensions.

They will be back in Canada?s lineup against Russia, but the Canadians played with 11 forwards Sunday.

?It was really a character win in a lot of ways,? Canadian head coach Steve Spott said. ?The moral of the story tonight is our depth players, our penalty killers, you know obviously Malcolm Subban.

?I?m really proud of him. It?s a big moment for Malcolm. He stood up tall to the task tonight.?

Subban had given up three goals on 28 shots in each of his previous two wins in the tournament.

Canada had to kill off a boarding penalty to Nugent-Hopkins with one minute 37 seconds remaining in the game.

Defenceman Jacob Trouba pulled the U.S. within a goal at 11:02. But the Americans hurt their own comeback attempt with penalties.

Captain Jake McCabe and forward Ryan Hartman took misconducts for checking to the head later in the third period. Trouba and forward Tyler Biggs took minors as well.

U.S. goaltender John Gibson, who played for Spott?s Kitchener Rangers in the Ontario Hockey League, also had an excellent game with 30 saves.

?You expect the best from him every night and he laid it out on the line for us tonight,? U.S. assistant captain J.T. Miller said. ?Penalties kind of took us out of it. It?s a bad feeling.?

The U.S., which finished seventh in the 2012 tournament, has lost back-to-back games by one goal with a 2-1 loss to the Russians as well.

?We had our chances,? coach Phil Housley said. ?It?s one thing if you?re not getting the opportunities to score, but we are. We?ve played two very good hockey teams and had a chance to tie the game in both.?

When Ty Rattie and Phil Danault were foiled on a short-handed, two-on-one scoring chance, Trouba scored a power-play goal on the following rush back to Canada?s end.

Strome made it 2-0 at 18:19 of the first period with his fourth of the tournament. Brett Ritchie worked the puck out from behind the net and Strome snapped it upstairs on Gibson.

Nugent-Hopkins opened the scoring for Canada at 7:13 in the first period, when his team won the faceoff in the U.S. zone. He feathered a low wrist shot past Gibson.

Subban, a Boston Bruins prospect, stopped John Gaudreau on a breakaway in the first period and held off an American flurry during a double minor to Canada?s Griffin Reinhart early in the second.

Polls show movement toward stricter gun control ? with major caveats

A new USA Today/Gallup poll taken shortly after the Sandy Hook massacre shows 58 percent of respondents saying they now favor stricter gun laws, up from 43 percent in October 2011.

By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / December 29, 2012

People crowd a gun show in Knoxville, Tenn. Friday. ?I have never seen anything like this here,? said Jeremy Pearson, who has managed the group that produces shows around the country. ?There is a lot of talk about a gun ban, but this show always draws good crowds for us.?

Michael Patrick/Knoxville News Sentinel/AP

Public attitudes toward private ownership of firearms have shifted over the years. In the 1990s, Americans were more inclined to favor stricter gun control. More recently, that mind-set has shifted toward greater support for Second Amendment protections of gun ownership.

But in the wake of recent mass shootings ? especially the Dec. 14 killing of 20 first-graders and six adult staff at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Conn. by a young man armed with an assault rifle with large-capacity magazines, handguns, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition ? another shift has occurred.

A new USA Today/Gallup poll taken shortly after the Sandy Hook massacre shows 58 percent of respondents saying they now favor stricter gun laws, up from 43 percent in October 2011.

Similarly, a new HuffPost/YouGov poll (also taken right after Sandy Hook) finds 55 percent agreeing that that gun control laws should be made more strict, 13 percent said they should be made less strict, and 27 percent said there should be no change.

2012 enters the record books. Were you paying attention? A news quiz.

In 2011, according to the USA Today/Gallup poll, most of those surveyed favored enforcing existing gun laws over passing new ones 60-35 percent. The latest poll has the number wanting new gun laws increasing to 47 percent. Meanwhile 92 percent in this new poll support background checks for buyers at gun shows, and 62 percent favor bans on high-capacity magazines holding as many as 30 rounds of ammunition ? steps favored by the White House and congressional supporters of stricter gun control.

At the same time, however, most respondents (51-44 percent) say they?re against any law making it illegal to manufacture, sell, or possess "semi-automatic guns known as assault rifles.? And a very large majority (74-24 percent) opposes greater restrictions on the possession of handguns.

The bottom line in Gallup?s new polling?

?Americans favor new legislation to limit gun sales, presumably to help prevent the kind of gun violence that became all too familiar in 2012,? writes the polling organization?s Lydia Saad in an analysis. ?This is seen in increased support for making the laws covering the sale of firearms more strict, and for passing new gun laws.?

There?s a significant caveat, however, Ms. Saad continues: ?Views toward banning semi-automatic guns or assault rifles are unchanged, and ? possibly reflecting Americans' desire to defend themselves given the rash of high-profile gun violence ? a record-high 74 percent oppose preventing anyone but the police or other authorized officials from owning a handgun.?

This negative attitude toward restricting handgun ownership is seen in the sharp and vocal criticism of the Journal News newspaper?s publishing of names and addresses of 44,000 licensed handgun owners in two New York counties this past week with locations pin-pointed using Google maps.

In response, New York state senator Greg Ball has proposed legislation that would bar the public from learning who the gun permit holders are in their communities.?In an online survey, the Journal News finds overwhelming support ? 89-11 percent ? for the proposal to keep gun ownership private.

Meanwhile, the phones at gun shops across the country are ringing off the hook, according to the Associated Press.

?Demand for firearms, ammunition and bulletproof gear has surged since the Dec. 14 massacre in Newtown, Conn., that took the lives of 20 schoolchildren and six teachers and administrators,? reports the AP. ?The shooting sparked calls for tighter gun control measures, especially for military-style assault weapons like the ones used in Newtown and in the Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooting earlier this year. The prospect of a possible weapons ban has sent gun enthusiasts into a panic and sparked a frenzy of buying at stores and gun dealers nationwide.?

In Colorado, reports the Denver Post, the rush to buy guns has become so great that the waiting time for background checks by a state investigative bureau ? some 3,000 a day now ? has gone from a few minutes to several days.

More Essential Health & Fitness Tips You May Have Missed or ...

_41C0989L-process-s300x200
Choose One New Healthy Habit At A Time ? Not 10 or 20
Small, simple changes can help you reap large results. Decide to do one small thing each day, such as drinking more water first thing in the morning or cutting down on artificially sweetened drinks. A few small daily steps can help you stick with new changes.

Why Do You Need to Train Hard?
You should train hard so you can achieve your goals, whether you want to lose fat, build muscle, get stronger, or simply look better.

Most people who go to the gym merely show up and go through the motions. It?s great they?re at the gym, but they aren?t getting anything out of their time and efforts.

Training hard will ensure you get the desired results and that you aren?t wasting your time. People tend to follow the path of least resistance, but it won?t get them to their goals. The solution: train hard!

You must challenge your body as well as your mind. Sometimes an exercise is more mentally challenging than it is physically.

Next time you are in the gym use a challenging weight and compound exercises. Maintain focus the entire time even during warm-ups, and train hard using proper form.

The Healthy Habit Of Lean People
People that care about the way they look put preparation into looking that way. They prepare their food the night before or first thing in the morning. Even if they don?t need to prepare their food they will more than likely know what they will be eating for the day ahead.

The healthy habit of lean people is thinking ahead and preventing situations that could lead them in the wrong direction towards getting lean.

5 Tips to Writing Job-Winning Cover Letters | Design Resumes

The cover letter remains a stumbling point for many job seekers. As a professional resume writer, I include cover letters in all the levels of my resume options because I believe a cover letter is essential in almost every job search.

When do you need a cover letter?

An easier question to answer is when don?t you need a cover letter? If you are dropping a resume off to the recipient or emailing it directly to the decision-maker, you might be able to drop the formal cover letter. However, in the case of emailing it to the decision-maker, you should still have a well-written note to the recipient about why you are qualified for the position.

What does the cover letter do for you?

If you consider the resume as a marketing document where the product is you, then you should consider the cover letter as the specific marketing notice that explains why you and your talents are exactly what the company needs in the position.

What do I need to know to write the best cover letter?

1. You need to know the industry and the company. You have to have done the research so that first, you understand the industry you are targeting and then the specific company. You need to know the products of the company inside and out so that you can speak to their needs in the cover letter.

2. If you mimic what the job description is looking for early in the cover letter, the reader or hiring manager will understand why you are applying for a specific job. Look at this example, transitioning from Hospitality to Financial Planning. She had 18 offers and is in her new role.

Throughout my career in the hospitality industry, I have built a reputation for confidentiality and discretion while working with elite guests. This skill set coupled with a profitability-conscious focus and a background in exceptional people management will make me an excellent candidate for an Associate Financial Advisor.

3. You will do better if you find specific areas in the job description that you are a direct match to and answer the question: ?why should I hire you?? in several points of the cover letter. Here is a quote from an internal candidate?s cover letter, and yes, even internal candidates should have a cover letter if requested or to reinforce their qualifications. This client is now the Executive Director of her non-profit organization.

If I am chosen for the role of Executive Director, I believe I can help move the organization forward with the same innovative momentum you and Nancy have established in recent history. I deeply understand and appreciate the culture of the organization from the staff members, our client families, potential donors and, of course the club members.

4. Give specific examples of what you bring to the table. This bullet point was in the cover letter example for a client that now has landed a key position in a national non-profit organization.

Secured Angel Investor for $16 million capital campaign, start-up costs, and three years of ongoing operating support.

5. Ask for the job in the cover letter. Too many candidates leave off the ask. Both of these closes ask for the interview.

Overall, I believe that I bring all the many attributes you are seeking in the position of Executive Director and I would be thrilled to discuss my qualifications and our bright future with you and the selection committee in a personal interview soon.

I would enjoy the opportunity to discuss how I could help coordinate your annual fundraising programs and events. Please contact me to schedule an appointment at a mutually convenient time.

If you are struggling to write your resume and the cover letter that will bring you to the next level in your career, perhaps it is time to work with an expert.

One Historical Gentleman Required

The Stillworth Agreement

The Roleplay In Question:

The setting is a large manor just out side of London that is owned by the Stillworth family, however the Lord and Lady of the house are out on one of their many business trips to the north of England. The house is therefore occupied by their two sons, one nephew and a kind man who is less of a butler and more of a family friend.

Mr Stillworth was owed a large sum of money by William Broke but William has since past away due to unknown circumstances. Due to this the Broke family must now pay of their debt, something that is hard to do when the owner of their failing company has died. An agreement was written up by the Stillworth's eldest son, in their place, that stated that the Broke family would instead work for them to pay of the debt. However the Lady of Broke house, Victoria, is still coming to terms with her husbands death and so her daughters decided to step in. So, the three of the daughters would go and live at Stillworth house as maids to work of the money their farther owed.

The Character In Question:

Eldest Stillworth Son ~ 19 Years of Age ~ A real gentleman who owns two shops within London but runs them mostly at the house. He is a determined person who never like to leave something unfinished, even when it is necessary. OPEN

Study shows heart calcium scan predictive of diabetes-related death from cardiovascular disease

Study shows heart calcium scan predictive of diabetes-related death from cardiovascular disease [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 20-Dec-2012

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. Dec. 20, 2012 People with Type 2 diabetes have two to four times the risk of cardiovascular disease compared to people without the disease. The best way for doctors to predict which diabetes patients are at the greatest risk for heart disease is to use a coronary artery calcium (CAC) test in addition to the most commonly used assessment tool, according to researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Current medical guidelines recommend treating all diabetes patients as high risk, but the Wake Forest Baptist study found that CAC can identify diabetes patients who are at very high risk for developing potentially fatal cardiovascular disease, as well as those who are at low risk.

"Our observations challenge accepted medical knowledge that all people with diabetes have the same risk. CAC is key in predicting the specific risk level," said Donald Bowden, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry at Wake Forest Baptist and senior author of the study, which is published online in the December issue of the journal Diabetes Care.

"People at very high risk are 11 times more likely to die from cardiovascular diseases as compared to those at low risk. Diagnosing a more precise risk level should help doctors provide more effective treatments and hopefully improve outcomes," he said.

The community-based Diabetes Heart Study was designed to determine if CAC provided additional information about cardiovascular disease and mortality beyond the Framingham Risk Score, the most commonly used assessment tool. A total of 1,123 people with Type 2 diabetes between 34 to 86 years old were followed for an average of 7.4 years. The study participants were recruited from clinics in western North Carolina and reflect a cross section of families with diabetes-affected members in the region.

CAC uses a CT scan to detect calcium build-up in the arteries of the heart. According to Bowden, the cost of the test is relatively low and the radiation exposure is about half of what someone would get in a year "by just walking around."

"Based on our study, we think that CAC should be added to the Framingham tool as the standard of care for all people with diabetes," Bowden said.

    ###

The Wake Forest Baptist team hopes to conduct additional research on how adding CAC as a diagnostic tool for diabetics could affect treatment and outcomes.

Co-authors of the study are Subhashish Agarwal, M.D., of Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center; Neal Jorgensen, M.S., of the University of Washington; Amanda Cox, Ph.D., David Herrington, M.D., Jianzhao Xu, B.S., Barry Freedman, M.D., and J. Jeffrey Carr, M.D., of Wake Forest Baptist.

This study was supported in part by the General Clinical Research Center of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center; National Institutes of Health grant R01-AR48797, and National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute grants R01-HL67348 and R01-HL092301.
